I was told that you must throw the coin from your right hand over your left shoulder (so behind you) as well. One coin means you will return to Rome, 2 coins you will fall in love and 3 coins you will get married and return to Rome. I think.
In any case I threw 3 coins and I've yet to get a date out of it, nor have I returned. lol

I am not the kind of person who believes in things like that, so I threw in one cent and thought nothing would happen and I still cannot believe my wish came true the very next day in a way it was totally unlikely to happen eek .
So who knows what magic things might happen to you one day eek wink .

oh hey, here's hoping! biggrin I had a plan to marry the man who worked behind the counter in the lovely little hotel I stayed at in Florence. But I was too shy to tell him my plan. It may still come to pass! And then we can go to Rome together. smile

eek was that an insult of some kind? boxed

i take it as such... i unno shrug
i'm not sure if it is, but *tidbit alert* if you've ever said "i've been jipped/gypped" it's taken from that certain situation bev brought up

so i've always kinda stayed away from that term nod

It's not an insult. The German tour guide explained to my tour group what they are and what they do and used the word Gypsies. Gypsies refer to themselves as Roma The tour guide mentioned they make a living preying on tourists, etc. They are a wandering ethnic group who have no home. They live all over Europe.

Nothing to do with the word being jipped nor was I being slanderous. Just passed on a warning to Nat. A group tried to approach me, and when I looked at them through my sun glasses to let them know I was aware of them, they backed off.

There are all kinds of criminals anywhere.

Nat, one more thing..... if you have a purse hold onto it tightly, watch out for mopeds. People committing a crime like to drive by and grab a purse. That's another thing the German guide warned the women about in the group.

Before you assume anything, best thing to do is ask instead of trying to make it into something it's not.

Well as you mention that your tour guide was German he could have mentioned that the term "Zigeuner" (German translation of gypsy) is a derogative term for Roma, Sinti etc.. Just saying confused . Maybe the English term gypsy is not, don't know, but the German term is.

Very true, my friend got all her lire stolen right out of her purse while we were on the bus back from the Vatican. It was so crowded on there we didn't even notice, and the crowded buses made it easy for guys to rub up against us too. ill I got harrassed more by the Roman men the one weekend I was in Rome than by French men the entire four months I lived in the south of France.

I think it's a good thing to bring it up hug. Would you have brought it up if it would have been the term negro? I don't know if it was meant in an offensive way by te one who posted it (I doubt it), but I think it is a damn shame that that tour guide used it disbelief.

The very link you provided contains this:
"The trend is to eliminate the use of derogatory, pejorative and offensive names, such as Gypsies, and to be given proper respect by the use of the self-appelation of Roma, or Rroma. Gypsies, although offensive to most Roma, is still a proper name, and as such, must always be capitalized."

So, while I undestand you meant no offense, and when I've seen it used I don't think offense was the intent, we are learning here today that IS indeed considered an offensive term.
