I am certainly not alergic to high end accomodations but am equally comfortable in minimal digs surrounded by laughter and joy. I have lived in both and can't say I like one over the other... for me a room is just a room... I am out for the experience. but oh the the love and laughter and truth will be something to hear!

I will fly coach and when I take a train I get business class.
As for hotels, though I almost always stay at a luxury hotel like the Ritz Carlton or a hip boutique hotel.

Reincarnate

Both.

I'm happy to back-pack but I do also enjoy going on cruises because you get to see a lot of places in a short time. It depends who I'm going with really. I'm happy to do either provided the company is good. If I'm by myself I tend to be more budget than luxury because I like looking for bargains.

I bought one of those discount coupon books the other day, and it has a free-companion-fare coupon for Amtrak, discounted second night at a cute guesthouse in Portland, and a two-fer coupon to the Portland Japanese Garden. I'm gonna take my girlfriend down there for a weekend soon. It'll cost less than $200. woot!

Unless I do a lot of flying between now and February 28th, I'm losing my elite status, effective March 1st. pout

I did just get an email from NWA about sale fares to and from Seattle. hmmm

It's a bit more tolerable if you're flying First Class. For example...

  • At most major airports, there are VIP security lines for First Class and elite passengers, so you get through more quickly.
  • You're allowed to board before everyone else (before the overhead bins fill up), and a flight attendant will take your coat and get you a drink while you're waiting for takeoff.
  • Your seat size is actually reasonable. I'm short and thin, and coach seats still feel cramped to me.
  • Booze is free instead of having to pay $5 per drink, and they're always giving you more. (BTW, you want to be careful about this -- alcohol hits you harder at high altitudes -- I'm speaking from experience here.)
  • They actually still serve full meals. They're nothing great, but better than having to pay inflated prices at the airport for a carry-on meal.
  • You're first off the plane. Northwest usually uses the door behind the First Class cabin for boarding and deplaning their 757's, and the flight attendants will actually hold back the coach passengers until the people in First Class have gotten off. (You'll really appreciate this if you've ever been in the back of a 757 and spent half an hour waiting to get off the plane.)
  • At least in theory, your luggage is loaded last so it's first off the plane. In my experience, though, this only happens about 50% of the time.

Y'know, going to Miami would likely get me more frequent flyer miles than flying to any other city in the continental U.S. hmmm

I think Jess has been to Miami on business at least once in the past few years. OTOH, I haven't been there in 20 years... I was just a kid back then.

I think First class sucks too. It's cracks me up when folks think they're getting something really "nice" in first class (which I'll fly on rare occasions when I want to waste my money on the plane instead of the destination) or when I simply don't want to be sandwiched between two people who've seen their fare share of all-you-can-eat buffets. They're selling you "an experience" which is little more than an illusion to me. You are pampered, but to me, it's like getting a FASTPASS at disneyworld---sure, it takes you 10-15 minutes instead of a full hour to go through the line, but your ass still has to use the same public bathrooms, still has to walk back to GOOFY parcking lot #37 at the end of the day, still has to get through security, still has to check your belongings in, and still has to deal with the noise, congestion and overall unpleasant experience of being in an amusement park. shrug If not for the additional space it provides, I wouldn't even bother.

The thin veneer of "additional value" it provides melts away quickly for me.

You simply haven't truly "made it" until you own your own jet IMO. shrug

I couldn't care less about being pampered; the very few times I travel first class it's only because of the extra leg room. To a tall guy like me on a 10 hour flight, that makes a world of difference.

Yup. I"m one of those folks too. I don't give a flying fuck about the other stuff. For me, the "upgrade" to first class has everything to do with space and nothing else.

But if I ever got my own jet, you know I'm going to pamper your ass boo!

Okay, get this. I flew out to Indianapolis on Friday night, and Northwest seems to have added a new perk for First Class and Elite passengers. They have a special boarding line that allows you to bypass the common folk, and there's literally a red carpet for you to walk down. eek I know red is Northwest's color, and I like traveling in style, but I felt pretty silly.

I wish they would have saved the money that they spent on red carpets and used them to buy pillows, which they seem to have removed from at least the domestic fleet. Fortunately the plane was warm (for a change), and I was able to fold a blanket into a pillow.

Problem was, I didn't get much sleep, because somebody brought a cat into the First Class cabin, and it seemed as if the cat meowed every time I was about to fall sleep. mad

When I got to my destination, I checked the Northwest website to see what their policy was on this... turns out there can be two cats in First Class and four in Coach, for a grand total of six cats per flight. neko neko neko neko neko neko

Now that I'm about to lose my Elite status and become a "free agent," maybe I should switch to an airline that makes pets ride with the luggage.

I've only flown economy non-stop but I'm considering flying first class next time. The seats are very small and I didn't like sitting so close to other people.

Hotels, mid-priced, 4 star but would love to be able to afford the luxury hotels. I don't care what hotel it is though, I don't trust the cleanliness of any of them. confused I bring my own sheets, towels, blaket and if I could fit my own pillows into my suitcase I would. lol If I drive to a vacation location then I pack EVERYTHING I can possibly pack into my car. I havne't learned to travel lightly. I'm accustomed to what I like at home and I want to have it when I travel as well.
