Here's a review of the film that I wrote...

‘And another great punch by Balboa ...’
Never mind the age jokes, ‘Rocky’ still delivers

by Jason Webber

"Rocky Balboa" – 3 Stars – 102 min – Rated PG

You have to give Sylvester Stallone credit. Even before shooting a single frame of "Rocky Balboa," he knew that everyone was going to be flipping through their thesaurus looking up synonyms for "ridiculous." Isn’t life cruel enough without another "Rocky" movie? Stallone is 60! Besides, "Rocky V" deserved its Razzie Award. Hang it up, Sly.

But lo and behold, "Rocky Balboa" has landed the screen. And dare we say it — it’s great to have The Italian Stallion back. It’s awesome, in fact.

It’s OK to make age jokes about Stallone and the title character. After all, every single character in the film teases Rocky when he says he’s interested in fighting again. His kid, Robert (Milo Ventimiglia) his brother-in-law Paulie (Burt Young), the media, everyone. Adrian passed away, sadly, but were she alive, she’d surely try to talk him out of stepping back into the ring for one more chance at "going the distance" glory.

The plot is just what you’d expect from a "Rocky" movie — Rock’s living in Philly, running a restaurant named after his late wife. His kid’s a snotty, big shot corporate drone and never visits his old man. Meanwhile, the current heavyweight boxing champ Mason "The Line" Dixon (Antonio Tarver) is in a pickle after HBO refuses to broadcast any more of his fights until he gets some "real competition." Then ESPN sets up one of those computer animated what-if fights to see who would win: Balboa or Dixon? Balboa wins … and Dixon’s management approaches Balboa with the proposal of setting up a real-life confrontation.

Not much of a plot, but the "Rocky" movies aren’t about that. They’re easy-to-swallow tablets of motivational power that make us feel like taking on the world and beating down the forces that would keep us a prisoner of our own fear. Rocky’s soon-to-be-famous monologue about "it ain't about how hard you hit ... it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward" would look right at home on one of those cheesy positive-thinking posters that haunt every office. But there’s something so genuine, so sincere and so goshdarned inspiring about "Rocky Balboa," you forget just how corny much of the material really is.

"Rocky Balboa" is unquestionably a highly personal project for Stallone. A 60-year old action hero isn’t likely to find much work in Hollyweird these days, and Stallone’s last starring role ("Avenging Angelo") went straight to video. But in reviving the Rocky character and showing how he deals with the cruel advances of time, Stallone has crafted a feel-good crowd pleaser that definitely pleases. Just ask the audience attending the sneak peek screening; with the way everyone was cheering, rooting and interacting with the film, you’d think they’d mistaken the "Rocky Balboa" theater for the one showing "Rocky Horror." No rice or toilet paper, but tons of energy, smiles … and tears.

Yo, Adrian! Your man did great.

I really hope this is a good movie and will be a success. I don't know, somehow I like Stallone, although I don't know him much at all.

I'm not looking forward to it. It's unrealistic. Can you imagine Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier or George Foreman figthing again at age 60? Mike Tyson is only 40 and he's as washed up as he can be. I also don't like how the fight scenes are staged. Rocky takes about 500 punches to the head each fight. And NO one could've survived the beating he took from Ivan Drago.(Dolph Lundgren) The Rocky movies should've ended right there.

hey, its a movie. lol if foreman can do it at 45 in real life, rocky can do it in theatres at 60. after all, this is the fight that kills him.

It kills Rocky, not Stallone. He says he wants to "re-visit" Rambo.

I saw it first showing.

WOW is was as good as the first one!!! eek The movie makes you laugh, cry & cheer! I dont want to give any of it away, just go see it... If you like the first movie you will like this one! Clearly now there is 2 Rocky Movies (Rocky 1 & Rocky Balboa)

The TV spots only tell you maybe 5% of the movie. The fight is really the least important thing in the movie, just like the first movie.

The script is layered, there is no weak parts! Even the reason for boxing, the boxing scenes all make sense and can happen. Sly backs up everything with examples and facts.

It looks like Sly watched the first movie about 10 times, then layered this new one with great little things. He totally found this character again.

amazing amazing movie!!!

4 out of 4 stars!

cool

I'm a see it.

As "ElectricBlue" says above, it is supposed be a real return 2 the 1st one, which was great.

Sure, some of the sequels certainly lost the grittiness of the 1st one, and maybe that's the reason why people here don't have the interest.

Just give me Sly in Philly again. Rough and rugged, baby.

What I never knew before, was that the original "Rocky" was so huge in Philly, that Philly nearly carried the film into mass release, acceptance, and the eventual box office smash that it was.

He represented the underdog, the working class, and an entire immigrant history in Philly... not just the Italians, but the Black and White populations as well.

I guess that's one of things I loved about the 1st one... it was all about class, not race.

When Sly goes 2 Philly, he's cheered like a hero, even today.

Of course, I need 2 mention the obvious... that "Raging Bull" is still (and will always be) the greatest boxing movie of all time... Not 2 mention the most visually stunning work of Marty Scorcese.

The first one was really fresh and raw when I saw it. (I was like 12) confused It's classic and had a nice romance story.

i just came from watching the new one. its very well done! i stopped taking the rocky franchise seriously after the 2nd one but this is a very nicely done ending. its not about the fight (as all the sequals were) but, like the first film, its about relationships and growth and inner strength. the fight is just the metaphor of pushing harder and facing the challenge.

it was sentimental without being cheesy or melodramatic and it was exciting without gimmicks. if you enjoyed rocky, you'll enjoy rocky balboa.
