That film is a masterpiece. Seems like something you'd like.

Only seen clips. shrug

check it out! It's in line with After Hours...Sandra Bernhard...Jerry Lewis...!!!

The Deniro character actually kidnaps Jerry Lewis and ties him up in a chair and takes over his show...giggle And he performs stand up routines in the basement of his mother's house before a life size blow-up of an audience. giggle It's hilarious! Very dry, dark comedy though. It sort of reminds of Being There with Peter Sellers, though a bit more sinister. I recommended it to my boss once who rented it and told me afterward he "didn't think it was funny"

OMG, as a person who slept on this one for YEARS I highly, HIGHLY recommend it. nod DeNiro isn't playing it for laughs like in those dumb as fuck "Meet the Parents" flicks ill He's playing it totally straight - just a pathetic dude who has no clue how crazy he really is. It's an awesome film exclaim

After Hours is one of my favorite movies. Griffin Dunne was perfect in it, as was Roseanne Arquette.

Exactly! One of Deniro's best roles in my opinion. I love when he does comedy. I LOVED his role in Jackie Brown where he plays another incompetent idiot. giggle

there's nothing tedious or especially unpleasant about the movie. in fact, i think it's a fairly un-scorsese-ish film...it almost feels more like an altman film to me, just in the satire aspect. but sandy's on fire in this film. i don't know if she's been as great in anything else, with the arguable exception of 'without you i'm nothing'.

they couldn't clear the credit. it's kinda like when kevin spacey was in se7en, only bruce is constantly surrounded by naked asian women - at least during the part of the movie where he does his "unreleased demo recording medley". if i told you any more, it would ruin the surprise.

OK. So let me get this sorted.

You're talking about Scorcese films which include Bobby DeNiro, but U don't like any other Scorcese films, other than what U have mentioned....

...such as, say:

Mean Streets
Raging Bull
Taxi Driver
Cape Fear
Goodfellas

Hmmmmm...

Actually, I don't think DeNiro's in After Hours or "Life Lessons", is he? confuse

As for your list, never seen MS, RB, TD and only saw part of GF. I did see Cape Fear when it came out, though, and I believe I liked it (if nothing else, I'm glad I saw it 'cause it made me appreciate the wicked Ben Stiller Show parody even more lol).

i'm not big on scorcese films myself. i think in terms of skill, he's an amazing director, but as far as the stories he chooses to tell, he's just not my speed. the whole gritty urban violent thing has its place - i'm not devaluing it - but after a couple of films, it all starts to feel a bit samey to me. that's why i liked 'king of comedy' - it felt like a real departure from what he always does.

'Raging Bull' is Scorcese's masterpiece.
... and U just gotta see 'Mean Streets' and 'Taxi Driver'.

I mean... U just gotta.

Ditto. I guess that's why I like AH and "Life Lessons". They're atypical for him.

if i were crazy about the craft of filmmaking (which i do find interesting, but i fall a little short of obsessive), i'm sure i'd be crazy about 'raging bull'. from a technical standpoint, it's a great piece of art. and for those who enjoy the genre of the film, i'm sure it's pretty top-drawer stuff. like i said before, i can APPRECIATE it, and all the work and skill that went into it - but as something that i can sit through and say "god DAMN that's my kind of film!" - sorry, no. lol

I hear U, and yes, it's all about personal taste.

For example. I generally don't like Victorian era period pieces.
...and I detest any film that is supposed 2 be a period piece from any era, in which the hair and/or the wardrobe is apallingly off... Like most films from the '70s and '80s that tried 2 take place in the '40s or '50s... They NEVER got the hair right... Well except 4 'Raging Bull', of course.
