7 calories per gram! Compared to 4 for carbs and 9 for fat. Alcohol is calorically closer to lard than to grain. Yum! lol

I don't get this, what do ya mean?

Have you tried that new 'butter flavored' crisco to bake with? I LOVE it!

Sure.

A calorie (short for 'kilocalorie') is the amount of energy that you get from burning a certain amount of food (measured by using the burning food to heat a fixed volume of water in a devide called a 'bomb calorimeter'). When we talk about a food being high in calories, one way to think of that is that it provides a lot of energy when it is burned. When we use food in our bodies, it is also "burned" and released as heat, which is why your body is warm. When we consume it but do not use it, it is stored as fat.

A gram of pure carbohydrate provides 4 calories of heat energy when burned. A gram of pure protein also provides 4 calories. A gram of fat provides 9 calories. Pure ethanol (alcohol) provides 7 calories per gram.

Simply, a given measure of alcohol has more calories than the same amount of carbohydrate or protein, and slightly less calories than the same amount of fat.

And no, there has been no butter-flavored Crisco in my life. No Crisco at all, in fact. I never bake. I'm lazy. lol

I think I'd eat strawberry quick out the container.

But I definetly would not eat a bucket of lard.

I wish I could knock some sense into one of my close friends, a 25-year-old guy, who is obsessed with fad diets. He was on Atkins on-and-off for about 2 or 3 years, did the slim fast thing, and now he's on some self-induced plan where he eats no bread or carbs, but tons of white meat and spinach. And he's afraid to eat nuts because of "the high fat content."

I tell him that he can't just simply block carbs out of his diet because it's unhealthy. But I think his mind is so skewed towards "carbs = fat" that he obsesses with it. He has been overweight most of his life, so I think his paranoia comes with how he grew up and his image of self. He's scared to revert back.

Update: Recently, I had an intervention with my friend -- based largely on this post -- and we talked about his body image issues. We both agreed that the road he was taking wasn't the most healthiest decision and there were better ways to tackle weight management and image issues without relying on fad fixes or stripping essential nutrients. I think my concern for his health touched him and he showed some signs that he's willing to make positive changes, which was cool.

No diets work. My doctor told me to stop dieting, eat smaller portions, walk every day and guess what.....after 6 months of NOT dieting I've lost 40lbs lol

Amen to that. Dieting is a waste of time, and folks are getting ripped-off with all these books, tapes & sh!t. Use plain old common sense - change your lifestyle, eat right and exercise.

you're luckier than i am. i already had that discussion and my person swore up and down that there was nothing to worry about, it's a perfectly healthy diet, her doctors are excited for her and approve, and i'm silly to disapprove of the atkins diet.

meanwhile, i've seen maybe ONE person on this thread approve of it, and even they seem to practice a modified version.

i'm going to see them over the holiday. maybe i'll get a little more work done then. shrug

congrats though, mara!

Thanks, I think you've offered some good ways to try and speak with her about her diet issues, but she behaves in a way similar to many people with body image issues, it takes them a while to realize that they may have a problem and if you call them out on it they get very defensive.

I think the best thing to try to give her literature or articles that speak about possible health benefits without sounding preachy or accusatory. My friend was taking thermogenic supplements and instead of me being preachy about how bad it was I just emailed him an article on "Thermogenic pills... are they safe" and had a phone conversation a day or two later where we just casually discussed the article. I didn't want to be confrontational @ all, and it worked, we opened some doors, but it's different with everybody.

Good luck with that situation. I definitely know it's hard, I've been going back and forth with my friend on this for a few years now.
