yes, living in the arm pit of hell (in the south) it is a basic necessity... every year people die from the heat doing basic shit like mowing the lawn at the wrong time of day.

i doubt it is necessary for most places... i lived in key west and we did not have AC... it was HOT for sure but we got use to it...

that being said... i have one and i use it... and i would be pissed if it broke...then call the guy to fix it...

I can live without it now, being that my apartment is in a basement so stays pretty cool most of the summer, but if I lived in any other circumstance I couldn't hack it. Sure, we only need it 2 months out of the year in Mpls, but those 2 months can be sweltering.

it'd be nice to have, seeing how hot it gets in mpls during the summertime, but i can't afford to have a window unit in my apartment (the cost of buying one, plus paying for the electricity to run it). plus, every summer during extreme heat spells the power in my apartment building goes out thanks to the few people who do have a/c and keep the shit running every day and all day. i hate that. mad

i stick with cold showers and bathing with dr. bronner's peppermint soap and sitting in front of my crappy window fans.

Now that it's cold as shit and I just turned the furnace up 5 whole degrees, I can barely remember the need for air conditioning.

Although I did want it in June and July. I'm kinda midwest like "mpls".

It gets to be 105 degrees in Tucson. You can burn your hand opening the car door. Central air in the summer along with $600.00/month electric bill for our big house. We have a swamp cooler, but doesn't work with humidity which starts in July with the monsoons.

It's funny that "air conditioning" usually is synomymous with "air cooling". In Japan most A/Cs could provide warm air as well since 99% of all buildings lack insulation. The damn thing would be on all year around and in the summers you had to complement it with several fans and in the winter with separate heating units placed strategically here and there. Indoors temperature regulation was constantly a problem.

Would you actually been a candidate for solar power or Wind power? 600 a month sounds like it might reach that threshold where it would make sense.

That's a hell of a lot of energy. Did your big house also have a pool or something?

Where i live it is a necessity to have AC in our houses with a weather that is extremly burnin' in the summer (dear God @ Aug. where it's up to 52 Degrees/125 F),

And it's terribly freezing during late Fall through Winter, so heating is badly needed.

this minute it's 2 Degrees outside

Pool, and family who leave lights on, doors open, 3 refrigerators, plus wine cellar refridge...the list is endless on power use.

I lived in Indiana for many years, and air conditioning is not a luxury there. Even my first apartment in Indianapolis -- a $440/month unit in a slightly run-down complex -- had central A/C.

When I moved to Seattle, I was surprised to find that A/C is not at all standard here. Right now I'm paying $1,200/month for a one-bedroom apartment in an upscale building that was built just a few years ago, and it doesn't have A/C.

To be fair, the climate here is relatively mild, and I'm amused when the natives complain about 80 degrees F being a "hot day." But there are some days in the summer when it gets a bit uncomfortable inside, and given how much I'm paying in rent, I really think this building should have A/C. (Well, it does, but only in the lobby and the commercial suites.)

are they ever planning to add A/C to the rooms? 'cause they should be for what they're charging.

Agreed. nod

But, I seriously doubt they will. There's no ductwork in the residential units. (The heat is provided by wall heaters... these and baseboard heaters are very common in Seattle.) It'd be an expensive retrofit, and I can't see them doing it to a building that's only two years old.

Also, the lack of A/C doesn't seem to be deterring would-be tenants... except for the most expensive units (around $2,000 or so per month), vacant apartments get rented very quickly. When we moved from a studio in the same building to our current one-bedroom, the new tenant was willing to rent the studio sight-unseen so he could get the jump on everyone else. (State law requires 48 hours' notice to the current tenant before an apartment can be shown to a prospective tenant.)

I remember, when I was a teenager,
the very first car I purchased had the very most basic form of air conditioning available at the time.

When you turned it on,
A hamster's upper torso would pop out of the dash board,
hold up a cube of ice, and blow on it towards you.
