Can a man be beautiful and angelic? Purely metaphorically, of course. Well?

metaphorically, of course.
we also have different perceptions and judgements as to what constitutes beautiful, and angelic.

As for looks - and thereby not "metaphorically" I suppose - there are plenty of androgynous prettyboys in Japan that might qualify for that angelic look. Daniel Henney is a favourite of a friend of mine.
As for inner qualities, which is what I'm assuming you mean by "metaphorically", of course there are men that are pure and good enough to eventually be canonized, if that's any measure of anything. .

I think John Lennon said once you recognise something in yourself, it disappears. To me that says you cannot be self-concious and have to live out this odd physical reality without personifying yourself in order to be recognised by your peers as your true essence. Should we stop looking inward and begin to lead if we feel we can? [Edited 12/14/06 15:15pm]

Not that I rate John Lennon, of course. I probably thought that myself. Somehow, I think Lennon once said something similar and I'm not a thief.

Why not? I just don't. I absolutely loved him when I was young - actually thought I may be his reincarnated spirit when I was 13 - but the older I got, the more I realised his poetry was poor and his opinions the reflexes of a emotional, bi-polar, depressed gadfly. I don't think he was very intelligent. Still love his tunes and lyrical honesty, though. But he's Jesus for dumb people.

I do believe that it's hard to be for example truly unselfish if you're consciously trying to do unselfish things or as you say recognize it in yourself. That's when the "unselfishness paradox" that cynics love to talk about comes into play (you know, that "people only do unselfish actions to make themselves feel good, which is selfish" yadda yadda...). As long as you're completely focused on the other person and their well-being I think you can be purely unselfish. So yeah, I do think Lennon is right, at least to a certain extent, and I do agree that we should stop looking inward. As for "leading", that should be a side effect of us just trying to live our lives the way we know we should. If we do that, others might follow which might in effect make us into leaders.

Not that long ago, when I was very vulnerable, I was duped into accepting Ringo as my Savior.

Seriously, I appreciate your thoughtful response. But Lennon didn't say that, it was my head. I get confused. You absorb so much and when it gets digested and shat out once more in a cohesive singular form, the original source is dessamated and distanced. I just checked google and Lennon was actually talking about the truth behind the curtain of 'reality' when he said that, as in you get little glimpes of the real answers if you look, but it's almost as if we're not supposed to know and the thoughtful donkeys among us are motivated by carrots on a string, tugged by an elusive, enigmatic cunt of a creator. Lennon didn't say that either, but something like that. I think honesty is angelic.

I think people expeccted too much from him maybe. I think he was intelligent, compared to some of the popstars out there today he was a genius.

Oh, absolutely! People do that all the time. We pick a "hero" based on a few good characteristics or opinions and then we fill in the blanks with our own thoughts and project them onto this person. Did you read that survey of what Americans thought Bush's stance on different issues was? Mighty interesting reading, I must say...
