Ex-Moderator | surgery/hospital etiquette Isn't it proper ettiquette that if someone close to you goes into surgery that their significant other or whoever is there calls you when they are out and fine and whatnot?
A friend went in for surgery at 4:30 today and the procedure was only supposed to take 15-30 minutes and he was supposed to go home tonight and no one's answering at their house and the mobile is still off and now it's 3 hours later. I hate this. It really was supposed to be nothing major, but I'd rather get confirmation that everything's ok rather than sit here all night wondering. What other etiquette for hospitals can you think of? |

they will contact you in due time, i'm sure. you never know if they're just exhausted and needing to rest before they start letting everyone know how everything went. if it's tomorrow and there's still no word, i'd worry a bit. until then, i'd just have faith that the situation is in good hands.

is there someone else you could call that might know more? if not just call the hospital. if they won't tell you anything ask for them to pass the message on to the spouse that you were inquiring.

Bring your own suppositories! Trust me nurses don't like to do that contrary to popular opinion

Considering the level of closeness involved here, I think it's reasonable to expect a call.
But, I think it's even more reasonable to assume that everything is ok, or else you would have heard. So, there. oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!

That's a good question. I would have hope they would have called. Then again, everything is probaby fine and they're home sleeping or something.

i don't think they'd avoid telling you...they were probably focused on waiting for the doctor to come out, etc..and might be very tired/stressed...i'd cut them some slack here.

Ex-Moderator | Everything was fine, it just took longer than expected. I got my call at around 8:45. I'm just impatient.
And I come from a long line of worry-ers. |

Surgeons always tell patients it'll only be ----- fill in the blank. That's just for the surgery. The reality is, if the patient is getting a general anesthetic, once in the OR the anesthesiologist has to put the patient to sleep, intubate, regulate machinary ("pass gas", nitrous oxide): there's also draping, prepping the skin.etc. Not to mention extubation post surgery, recovery room stay, treating pain, nausea, out-patient instructions.
I hate it when surgeons minimize the time. The family is in the waiting room worried and think something's gone wrong. [Edited 12/14/06 7:57am]
