The Puppy Thread

My friend's Chow had puppies-2 brown and 1 black. She is giving the black male puppy to my son and the puppy is so adorable. I don't know anything about puppies and the things that they need. Can you please tell me some things about them, especially Chows and feel free to post pics. Thanks in advance hug

Well, what we did the first couple of weeks is just stay up and take him out whenever he started whining like he needed to go. We had to take him out about 5 times a night. But then when they get a little older, they can hold it longer and they'll let you know they need to go by sitting at the door or getting your attention somehow.

I see now-thanks. What do you think is a good brand of food to put him on? His parents are spoiled-they only eat the best. They're great dogs.

Is that a great brand for his nutrition and coat? When do puppies need their shots? I appreciate you answers-I know some of my questions may sound naive, but thanks hug

As far as I know it's the best brand for nutrition and overall health. And you should take him to the vet as soon as you can for a basic check up type thing. I don't know the shots off the top of my head, but they need to get a handful of immunizations and then the vet'll give you heartworm pills for him to take every month.

So happy for you! Puppies are so sweet smile

its been about 16 yrs since i had a puppy ... but i will give it my .02 (i am soon due to get one ...lol)

first off- they do not need to pee every hour ... when i got my first puppy - i had it flown to me (6 -7 hr flight ) and it did NOT pee in the crate ...

crate training - highly recommended .... the "crate" becomes more or less their "cave" or safety spot .... my dog got big - and she got to a point where if friends were over .... and she greeted them ... she would later go and lie down in the crate ... to relax, etc ... it was comforting ... and if the crate is NOT too big ... they will not relieve themselves in that crate ... that is why crate training is recommended by alot of folks ... they MAY cry some at first like at night .... but .... let them ... or .... let them out a few times ... your choice ... within reason .... they are like babies ... in alot of ways tho ... "crying" is not terrible ... (they are trying to get a response)

my puppy - was a german shepherd ... and like a CHOW ... be prepared for the "chewing " stage ... they will go for just about anything ... i lost shoes ... socks ... etc ... i was NOT prepared for it !

shedding ... not sure how bad chows are ... but my dog needed brushing daily pretty much .... the one thing i DO NOT miss (about not having a dog .... ) - cus u can clean the whole apartment/house ... and 10 min later it looked like u never clean the shithole ... lol

the LAST thing i highly recommend ... especially with the bigger dogs .... take training classes ... even if its at 3-4 months to socialize them ! ... you will learn alot about canine interaction as well as helping with the dog NOT jumping up ... biting ... etc ... just my .02 wink

ok .. enuf ... enjoy your puppy !!!! smile

first off- they do not need to pee every hour ... when i got my first puppy - i had it flown to me (6 -7 hr flight ) and it did NOT pee in the crate ...

most likely the pup had not been given any water prior to being put into
the crate. an average pup will eat and drink and need to pee or poo in just
a little under half an hour after, or even sooner.

they also need to pee a bit right after they wake up. so that's the kind of
moments you should watch. or when your puppy finished playing with you or
your child(ren) and walks away, that's another time he will feel the need
to go potty, lol.

crate training - highly recommended .... the "crate" becomes more or less their "cave" or safety spot .... my dog got big - and she got to a point where if friends were over .... and she greeted them ... she would later go and lie down in the crate ... to relax, etc ... it was comforting ... and if the crate is NOT too big ... they will not relieve themselves in that crate ... that is why crate training is recommended by alot of folks ... they MAY cry some at first like at night .... but .... let them ... or .... let them out a few times ... your choice ... within reason .... they are like babies ... in alot of ways tho ... true. but people have to keep in mind that it will be a horror for the
pup if you feed him at night and then put him in the crate and leave him,
or her, there all night even if it cries.

a dog will not soil his own turf unless he really has to, once you've got
your dog to realise it has to doo it's stuff outside, he will not do it
in the house or in his crate anymore unless it really cannot help it at
all anymore (like after being left too long or having had too much to
drink right before being left alone).

you really have to make sure it has done it's business outside before you
put it in the crate. the first night, even if they're quiet i would still
go check and take them out about once a night.

they quickly learn to keep up longer and before you know it your puppy is
two or three months in your home and it will seem like he can sleep for as
long as you can on the weekends. it's all a question of making sure they
get a chance to relieve themselves before they go to sleep last thing.

personally i never used a creat. i raised 1 dog with/for my parents and
now this one on my own and i just kept them in a box next to my bed the
first night. then in the same box on the hallway the second night and
in the kitchen the 3rd night.

the longest they cried was about 10 minutes and then i would simply go
down, talk to them and tell them they were not alone and that we were
all still around, lol. you know, it's kinda ok to let them cry for a
while or adress them sternly but only after you're sure that the dog
fully realises that he belongs in this home and is not being left alone.
he's just been through a major transition and just needs to be reassured
that he won't be left alone.

but once he realises this (4 days max), you shouldn't get up every single
second your dog cries cuz before long he will be sleeping in your bed and
you will be in the kitchen, on the floor, lol

my puppy - was a german shepherd ... and like a CHOW ... be prepared for the "chewing " stage ... they will go for just about anything ... i lost shoes ... socks ... etc ... i was NOT prepared for it !

we've had four different dogs at my parent's house, and i've only had
one until now (he's just 5) and none of them have ever chewed up stuff in
the house like sofa's or shoes, lol. just make sure that they have enough
toys to play with like those dental floss ropes, some chewing bones which
you replace as often as you have to (for a while my dog ate 1 each day eek )
and they also like *carefully* playing tug of war when their teeth hurt.
best for my dog was a large towell with a know in the middle that he'd
bite down really hard on and then pull very slightly. he'd love it.
also just make sure that if you don't want him to eat your shoes, to just
take them off the floor before you leave the dog alone with anything.

shedding ... not sure how bad chows are ... but my dog needed brushing daily pretty much .... the one thing i DO NOT miss (about not having a dog .... ) - cus u can clean the whole apartment/house ... and 10 min later it looked like u never clean the shithole ... lol

lol. exactly. the shedding is insane on some dogs. my dog is a reasonable
shedder with short stubby hair but i do brush him every day for a bit and do
hoover the appartment every day because of it. the best thing is when you've
just spent 25 minutes hoovering, 20 minutes mopping and scrubbing the floor
and your pooch runs in from the garden with muddy paws

mushy

not! mad

the LAST thing i highly recommend ... especially with the bigger dogs .... take training classes ... even if its at 3-4 months to socialize them ! ... you will learn alot about canine interaction as well as helping with the dog NOT jumping up ... biting ... etc ... just my .02 wink

indeed. very important. especially if you haven't had dogs before or don't
know that much about your particular breed. training classes might seem like
a bit of a task cuz you have to go there and spend time there but think about
it as a great way to bond with your dog, whom you will have in your home for
aprox 10-15 years. this way you get a better understanding of the animal and
it, in turn, will learn to understand you. plus, training can make a *HUGE*
difference in how much you enjoy your dog in the house and around people

and lastly, even if all this info might seem like a bit much to take on,
or like too much time/work to invest, just realise that it really is worth
it in the end cuz a good relationship between a nice dog and your family is
really a big asset and it will bring you a lot of joy and fun times

When u visit next puppy take a small blanket and let the mama sleep on it with litter mates. When bringing puppy home take the blanket home with you it will make the puppy settle quicker.
Another trick is a small teddy if you rub it over the mama 2 pick up her scent little one will cuddle up to it.
Do not change the pups food feed it the same food the breeder gave the pup or you could make little one very ill.
You will need 2 bowls a bed a few toys eg nylabone dental and a baby kong are great toys will keep the young and old occupied for many hours, crates are good for training them but I personally only use one when I need to keep the poopmeister safe or calm when he is ill.
You may need some potty pads or some old newspapers will do for potty training.
Do not take pup outside onto the ground in public places until little one has had all vaccinations.
Make sure ppl leave shoes at the door and do not let puppy play with them, this is just precaution to make sure no diseases are brought in until puppy is fully vaccinated.
Look into insurance for puppy just make sure the insurance policy is illnesses for life.
Purchase a Doglopedia book also a Chow Chow breed book.
Contact the Chow Chow breed club they will advice you on the breed also ask if they know of a good Chow Chow groomers in your area.

ur gonna have so much fun hug
