I remember I really enjoyed working as a film critic at the time (maybe 6-7 years ago), but I wouldn't want to go back to it. Film critics are all pompous assholes, and I was probably just like them.

I can't think of one job that was fun, that I really, really enjoyed. confused They've all been ok, or I quit. But nothing that makes me wake up in the morning and think, gee! I can't wait to get to work!

Oh, I suppose I liked managing the movie theatre when I was 19. But there was a lot of crap along with the good stuff and there's not much of a future in theatre management.

Veterinary Technician.

It's a lot of in-the-trenches responsibility for not a lot of money or appreciation. But I might have continued to do it for a while, had it not been for all of the interpersonal D-R-A-M-A. It's a feild dominated by women, and while being surrounded by smart chicks is cool, I've decided that all-female workplaces are not for me.

My other jobs have ranged from sometimes ok to completely unbearable. smile

Definately when I was Application Packaging and Distribution Engineer. We essentially took source code written by internal (or vendor) programmers(coders), and created distribution scripts in .msi or .exe format, and placed them on the network to be distributed to the network. When needed, we could actually distribute a software update to thousands of folks in minutes doing this method. The challenges and recognition (there were 7 of us servicing a company with 60 thousand employees), were substantial.

It's been the only time in my career where a job didn't feel like a job, and without having attained that gig, I wouldn't have the masters degree I have now, and the career I semi-enjoy. lol

I actually was totally unqualified for the job, but a friend of mine managed to get me booked into it. I am forever thankful to him.

I didn't bother to read that. I was bored after ".msi" so I skipped to the end.

But it reminds me, about 11 years ago a friend's mother ran a travel agency and she offered to train me in as one. At the time I was making $2 more an hour than she was offering to start me out at, so I said no. But now I really, really, really wish I had taken her up on it. I think of all the free/inexpensive travel I could have done from then to now, and I'd definitely have broken even, maybe even be ahead. pout

Burn out. The summer schedules were insane. The 11 days on 2 days off, 70 hour weeks killed me.

And I was only getting paid for 40hrs at $10/hr.

It was a labour of love, not really a career. I lasted 3 years before I had to get out and make some real money.

Ouch. Yeah, the long hours alone make it difficult to keep it going no matter what the pay is and if the pay is lousy too I can see why you snapped after a while. I'm keeping an eye on one of my best friends right now to see when he'll break. He's working with investment banking from around 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. every weekday plus at least one eight-hour day every weekend... I think it's the high salary that's still keeping him there, so in a sense you can count yourself as lucky that you didn't get trapped by something like that.

My favourite job ever was switchboard in Sydney before I came over here to London... it was the PERFECT situation (perfect for me, anyway) and I loved it. my coworker there turned out to be a very close friend and everything was just fantastic about it. I wish I could go back to it the way it was but the position has changed a lot apparently and it's now nowhere near what it was...

Definitely teaching adults in Japan. I wasn't particularly good at it, especially since it was hard for the mostly middle-aged students there to take a 21 year old seriously, but it was quite nice. It was like being in this Bizarro world, where speaking English makes you special and revered.

And even though teaching kids there was sometimes really awful, there was no greater feeling than when class ended and the girls would give me a hug.
