Two teachers (Both high school)



Mrs. Obar (an English teacher) 11th grade
Mrs. Rickman (An english teacher) 12th grade



Mrs. Obar thought me to care about school.
Mrs. Rickman tought me to care about what authors were writing. Through Mrs. Rickman I discovered the limitations that many American authors faced and how their use of metaphor, etc. allowed them to get around that.
I started to realize the true genius behind Hawthorn, Golding, etc. and will forever be thankful to those ladies. They changed my life.

He's the guy when I was playing basketball in college told me I had potential to be a great instructor and said if anyone was born to be a teacher it was me! We always stayed in contact throughout my time in college and he pretty much got me into grad school and teaching credential program with his letter of recommendation. my english teacher all through high school, Ms. Nichter. she was insanely strict and screamed at our class at least a few times every year, but she was excellent. i can still breeze through in-class essays thanks to her.

At UK, I had a professor... Dr. Bruce Holle. He was amazing. He was my History 104 (European history) professor, and he'd been teaching around 25 years at the university level he said. He was a fat man with a full head of bushy grey hair and a thundering voice. And even though history was always my favorite subject, he could make it even more exciting for me. Who knows how many times he'd taught the same material, but dammit if he wasn't up hopping around, reenacting battles down in the front of Memorial Hall auditorium and dropping the F-bomb and reading Cicero to us...

...shit, I loved MWF at 2 PM!

I also had some wicked-good English teachers who made me really feel special. And I'm so glad they taught typing when I was in junior high and that the teacher was so good. ...Oh! And Elisabeth Harvor! I had the pleasure of studying with her in University and she was very encouraging to me.

Outside of the school system, I would say Bruce Springsteen, Woody Allen, Chris Rock, Bill Maher, Ann Magnuson, David Baeder, Neil LaBute, Don Henley, Tom Waits, reality TV, Kathy Griffin, Madonna, Howard Stern, David Baerwald, Chuck Klosterman, Lou Reed, Paul Simon, Mick Jagger, Warren Zevon, Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld, The Org...but, most of all, my parents and my brother-in-law.

P.S. I should also give a shout out to the female teachers who let me get away with all sorts of shit 'cause I think they were quite possibly lookin' for a little Debra Lafave-style action.

I forgot to give...how you say? - "Props"? - to the French teacher who was very sweet and who thanked me for looking out for her young, gay son who was still pooping his pants at sleepaway camp.

Mr.Stokes... History and for kicking my ass
Mr.Joblin and Mr.Price... Biology and Chemistry, respectively.

College:
Mr.Jones... Biology (top man ),
Mr.Hopton... Chemistry (and for fighting my corner ).

2nd College ( ):
Dr.Pluck... Biology (and for just being there )

Uni:
Prof. Jai-Paul Singh... For various Physiology modules and his direct, no nonsense and atypical methods (and again, for the ass kicking ) Star man!

Miss Brown, gym teacher, Julia....i was 17...

My third grade teacher Ms. Baker remains, to this day, the person who influenced me the most. She was more encouraging than my mother and kept up with my progress all through high school. She was wonderful and I miss her so much.

In grades 1-3 my home room teacher, Karin Olsson. She was the best, I still say hello to her whenever I see her and she remembers me, in a good way.

In grades 8-9, my swedish and english teacher Conny Steinmo. He gave me individual assignments cos I was way ahead of the others and was bored to death. He also knew how to tell when things were shit for me at home and he'd start a fight to let me blow off steam, dismiss the other kids and let me cry out. He was the best. He also remembers me still, in a good way.

to both of them, because of them my life was easier in school.

My 4th grade teacher, Mr. Hulbert. He inspired my love of science, and encouraged my general geekiness, and he was so fun and loving and wonderful.

If not for him, it would easily be my 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Rowland. She was just special, and made all of "her kids" feel like the most important person on Earth.

Beth Nahre, my 6th grade teacher. She was the first teacher I ever had to take me aside and tell me I was talented. She also assigned me to keep a creative writing journal, which nobody else in class was assigned to maintain - and I wasn't graded on it, I just turned it in and she'd give it back to me with comments written in the margin. She got me to write daily and I actually looked forward to doing it and to getting her remarks back!

She was also great because she stood up for a super effeminate kid in class who everyone was picking on and lectured us about how we should respect differences. I'll never forget that day. And she also took part in demonstrations, and one day came in with her picket sign and told us we might be seeing her on the news, and here's why.

She was a total hippie and she made us all strive to be individuals. I've had great teachers since then, but I wouldn't be who I am now without Mrs. Nahre, I'm sure of it.

I wasn't the most popular but i wasn't a nerd that nobody liked either. I just blended in. The teachers always complained that i didn't put my hand up enough and that i always managed to get out of doing presentations in front of the class.
