Duchamp's works such as "Fountain" were boring and ridiculous to the general public, but to other artists, not only was it funny, but it really opened the doors for them. It encouraged them to create whatever they wanted, and say whatever they wanted, and not worry about if it would ultimately be considered "art" or not. It was also a call to appreciate art from a conceptual standpoint, and not only for technical quality/craftsmanship. Duchamp took everyday objects out of context. While his own sculptures were pretty simplistic, other artists down the road went on to do some great work in this same manner. Look at Rauschenberg's paintings for example - actually many of the pop artists did this.
The Impressionists were up against photography, so they were trying to show what qualities a painting could produce, that a photograph could not. Many of them were using short brushstrokes of solid unmixed colors, to give a shimmering effect, and let your eyes blend everything together.

My mom loves Kincaid & shiny things too. She has those horrible 'collectors' plates of Kincaid hanging on the wall and she used to have Kincaid images on her checks.

I think most of Prince's album covers are pretty horrible. The only good ones I can think of are SOTT, The Rainbow Children, Come and - to be honest - LoveSexy (all homoeroticism aside, it is a pretty stylish cover). New Power Soul anyone?
