I know I feel the same. Though I'm attracted to whatever I consider beautiful, I also find it attractive if a less-than-beautiful woman likes me. And if it's too overt or desperate (something that rarely happens to me but has once or twice), it can be unattractive even on a pretty girl.

Well, "overt or desperate" hasn't happened since I was a kid, but I assume it happens to women on a regular basis. But in those situations I wasn't really interested, even though there was nothing wrong with the girls (other than their very strong interest in me)

I think all of my girlfriends have been beautiful, but I've gone on dates with some girls I didn't think were beautiful. And I'm flattered by anyone who thinks I'm attractive, even men.

My idea of beauty is somewhat shallow, but physical beauty is partly an illusion that can break down or be built up by personality.

But it's been a while since I could put these beliefs to any kind of test

See in my case, I'm the complete opposite. The people I tend to think are beautiful (well, I suppose I'm talking about men here) are not in any way usually considered attractive or sexy by "normal" standards. I like goofy or interesting looking men. I hardly even glace at "beautiful" men I suppose. Usually because they seem so full of themselves.

Women on the other hand, well I can appreciate a beautiful woman, but usually a woman with more striking features (such as a prominent nose), great shoes, or a really interesting style will always catch my eye.

I guess it's shallow in that the Victoria's Secret model is going to get my attention before her cooler, sweeter, more intelligent friend, even though I know her beauty may be only skin deep.

But (and I haven't been single since the 90's, so this is from the outside looking in) I know women that i don't consider physically attractive who have become much more attractive to me over the years because of their intelligence, confidence, and comfortable sexuality. Unfortunately, if I had been available I might not have given her the chance until it was too late. That's the shallow part.

I am too, actually. I tend to go with the Tom Robbins definition that says that someone who is tradtionally good looking can be pretty...but, they'll never be beautiful...that's for the truly unconventional...those with interesting "flaws" which make them beautiful.
