Yeah, it was SO painful. Firstly, they got rid of the stove/oven so everyone was 'advised' to bring room temperature or chilled hors d'oeuvres. It was mostly chips & salsa, hummus/pita, and a cheese plate. (I brought nada!) Styrofoam plates and plastic silverware. And red or white wine--pour it yourself into a plastic cup (the small ones, not the big ones). Then two people from the company and a hired keyboardist (on a casio) sang about 6 'holiday' songs. I would have rather had them take the money they used to hire the keyboard guy, buy the wine and the Kid Robot stuff and divide it into a 'bonus.' Even if it was only $30, I'd rather have that than forced after-hours fraternization and potluck. They make us do a summer potluck too. The sr. management thinks it fosters a "big happy family" feeling. I think it's weird and extremely tacky to make employees bring their own food to a party.

I've worked for several non-profits and this is the only one that is uber cheap when it comes to stuff like this...it's because its part of the fuckin' Federal Government. (damn the man!)


Yeah, and bonus? That concept doesn't exist in my industry.

Do the people at your company think that's weird? I think it's super tacky, but my mom's company does it too and she thinks they're all fine with it. I think it might be contingent on region. I live in New York (and Chicago before that) where most companies have catering at the very least. My parents, however, still live in rural Iowa--potluck is big there in general.

my office has actual potlucks on occasion, with people bringing in stuff like stew, homemade desserts, candy and stuff like that; we don't have to bring stuff in if we don't want to (i usually don't). we're probably gonna have an all-dessert holiday goodie blowout when it gets closer to x-mas.

TR's boss has a killer little party at his home ...usually around 15 people max there

GREAT foods and wine ( his wife throws down a feast )

I think that will be weekend after next

Mine is Saturday Night at the doctors house. Should be fun- food, drinks and great company. I am bringing a hot date so it should be a blast.

The Christmas Party for my workplace is tonight.... I have to show up there in 5 hours and we all take a coach to a hotel in the not so far away countryside.... There will be a full buffet and (hopefully) free drinks and all paid by the company .... Only problem is that the weather guy on Channel 2 predicts some really heavy winds at the exact time the party is (between 6 pm and midnight) ... Anyway I hope the weather won't be so bad they cancel the party..

I have a work Christmas Party this week and I SO don't want to go.

There will be no indie music.
