I loved this painting when I first saw it in art history class. But once I found out Christina couldn't walk it ruined the painting for me for some reason. I think in my mind it was more "romantic" that she was in the field looking towards the house lovingly. With the knowledge that she is crippled, the painting becomes more sinister. How did she get there? Why isn't there anyone helping her? Does anyone even live in the house? (And notice the birds/bats flying out of the barn.) The actual painting is at the MoMA and even when I see it in person it makes me sad now. I actually find the painting empowering. My boyfriend's mother has a book about Andrew's paintings, and it talked about how Christina would drag herself around the farm using only her arms. Talk about independence and strength! I admire her for not letting her disability stop her from enjoying her own property. Wanna hear me sing? www.

My French is hideous but Im going to do a rough translation: "LleeLlee likes this picture as it represents phallic imagery, or a sexual image. Something secret, message in the org, something lacking inhibition." Thats all I got, Ill give you ooh la la. Femme la bouche! I like it because of the concept behind it which is that it's an image of a pipe and not the pipe itself. So, This is not a pipe is right, because it isnt a pipe, its a picture of a pipe, More or less... but you might want to interpret it differently.

I thought it said a little more than that. Obviously it is a painting of an object which becomes something sexual; something for LleeLlee's secret room where no one else can go...It is a little strange, you know, and the painting is certainly a message for all the org. She wants to explain that she is in reality...a women without inhibition!"
Sorry to get OT, and I was only going to respond to Retina privately, but since you also responded, I would say that what Retina said about the painting becoming something sexual is also true, especially considering the double meaning of the word pipe (in French) and the juxtaposition of that sexual meaning & the phallic form of the pipe itself with the bowl of the pipe. (Now whether you intended people to read that into your post is another matter.) But I also think that by saying "this is not a pipe" Magritte addresses the very academic/art historical notion of painting as representational which was being drawn into question at the start of the 20th century. (Especially with photography becoming more accessible. Painters were no longer required to 'document' reality.) The first ptg I posted--The Innocent Eye Test by Tansey addresses this same art historical problem. Okay, so sorry for the off topic posts! I'm just a huge art geek! Sometimes it's nice to have the interpretation left up to our imaginations. [Edited 12/5/06 17:37pm] Wanna hear me sing? www.ChampagneHoneybee.com
