Who was Gina Gershon in the film? I don't remember her in it smile

I think my fave part is the whole lead up to the prom - making the dress (which was pretty cute), walking in w/ that "I touch you once, I touch you twice) song playing... or did that play when he ran up to her in the parking lot? hmmm

Whatever, I dig that movie. BUT it always makes me wanna watch 16 Candles - something where I don't have to look @ Andrew McFuckingCarthy ill

I like the scene where Molly and Andrew are in the library and he sends her what can only be described as a prehistoric IM. And she asks who is writing her and he sends his picture. And I'm just thinking, with technology back in 86, that must have taken him like 3 days to set up. I remember trying to program a 30 second tune into my Tandy Radio Shack computer and it took me like four hours to write the code to do it.

I LOVED this movie when I was a teen. Not my favorite of the John Hughes teen flicks, but still pretty durned good. I sooooo identified with Duckie.

I always look at the end of the movie with mixed emotions. It pisses me off that Duckie just sends Andie to Blaine without so much as putting up a fight. I mean he has stood by her through thick and thin whereas Blaine abandoned her ass when it got tough with Steff and his richie friends. But then Duckie ends up with the ultimate 80's hottie Kristie Swanson so it's all peaches and cream.

I've never seen it, but it's on my Christmas list. I like all of the 80s actors in it, but especially James Spader and Jon Cryer.

Ironically I didn't buy the end of Some Kind of Wonderful even though it was the same damn movie with a gender switch. I just never felt the chemistry there between Stoltz and Masterson but that could be because, for the most part, Stoltz gives such a "don't give a crap" performance in the movie.

But at the time I thought he was sooooo dreamy. Well, he still is dreamy, but at the time I loved the sensitive artist type of his character as well. And she was just so damn cool you had to root for her. smile

Some Kind of Wonderful may be one of the biggest examples of self-plagiarism in the history of movies. Except John Hughes is going, "Hey I made the hot girl poor, too...step off!" I do like Mary Stuart in the movie but Lea Thompson always got on my nerves and the rich villian in the movie is a big transparent weenie. And Stoltz is heavily medicated, except for the shower scene where he tells his father he spent all his lawn mowing money on a freaking necklace and, after going postal for approximately 30 seconds his dad is like, "Okay, sounds good." Rates kind of low on my reality scale.

Actually, the whole reason Hughes DID Some Kind Of Wonderful was to tell the same story with the ending he originally intended for Pretty In Pink (in fact, the song "Pretty In Pink" is actually featured in SKOW). In his original cut, Andie wound up with Duckie. The film was screened for test audiences, and they hated the first ending (which just goes to show you that test audiences aren't always right). Hughes had to go back and re-shoot the ending. For years the original ending was lost, but I've heard that the new DVD release has it as a deleted scene.

Hughes turned around and did Some Kind Of Wonderful immediately after delivery Pretty In Pink to the studio, because he really wanted to have his version of the story be told. As already noted, he just switched the genders of the characters around. Unfortunately, it is a far inferior film to Pretty In Pink, even with the same director and same story.

From Chuck Klosterman's brilliant piece "This is Emo" (which can be found in his Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs):

At least on the surface, movies and television actively promote dating the nonbeautiful: If we have learned anything from the mass media, it's that the only people who can make us happy are those who don't strike us as being particularly desirable. Whether it's Jerry Maguire or Sixteen Candles or Who's the Boss or Some Kind of Wonderful or Speed Racer , we are constantly reminded that the unattainable icons of perfection we lust after can never fulfill us like the platonic allies who have been there all along. If we all took media messages at their absolute face value, we'd all be sleeping with our best friends. And that does happen, sometimes. But herein lies the trap: We've also been trained to think this will always work out over the long term, which dooms us to disappointment. Because when push comes to shove, we really don't want to have sex with our friends...unless they're sexy. And sometimes we do want to have sex with our blackhearted, soul-sucking enemies...assuming they're sexy. Because that's all it ever comes down to in real life, regardless of what happened to Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf.

Mary Stuart Masterson was hot in that, though. boff

2 things that always bug me about "Pretty In Pink". The "Duckie" character came across as gay to me and i didn't buy the triangle with him in it. I guess that's Jon Cryer's fault.

And that god awful wig that Andrew Mcarthy is wearing at the end of the movie at the dance. Was that because they had to reshoot the ending and he had already cut his hair for another movie??

OMG I love this film. I really, really wanted that pink telephone that she had in her bedroom. And, I really wanted a friend who had their own flat where I could hang out while trying on clothes.

lol at the things you think will be brilliant when you've grown up.

Well you could be right. I had a huge crush on a girl in high school and acted very much the same way. I would get mad if she had a date and so forth, although I also liked men.

I understand the same is true of Graffiti Bridge. Prince had originally wanted Apollonia to turn into a feather at the end of Purple Rain but it was nixed.

I love this movie. nod The Otis Redding bit is my favorite part. And I like when she goes to the party w/ him and the bitch says, "Nice pearls. This isn't a dinner party honey!" and rolls her eyes. lol

I always got confused at that part as a kid because I didn't understand why they made fun of her for wearing that necklace. I hadn't even noticed it. lol
