My friend told me in all seriousness that since he started yoga he can bend over and put his whole palm on the floor.

I was amazed, this guy was always very stiff. And sure enough, he demonstrated, palms on the floor, knees almost completely bent!

That's what's so sad, is I used to be a gymnast. I had incredible flexibility. But I quit just before I grew about 8 inches, so I still have the tendons of my 5'4" self. And just over 10 years ago I took up jogging, which made me even tighter.

I can remember what the splits feel like, but I can't bend at all.

Are you naturally flexible, or do you stretch a lot?

Can I borrow your 5'4" tendons then? lol Because ever since I stopped and dancing doing yoga daily, AND started running in place of those I'm horribly stiff compared to what I used to be. lol

I'm 5'4" btw. nod

My tendons are rapidly becoming those of an old man, as well!

Running is great, but I never want to stretch afterwards. I do yoga sometimes, but not often enough to have made any difference in my flexibility.

You stopped dancing because of injury?

Long (LONG!) story short lol ,yes. A bad back and neck injury. It will be two years in February. omfg

But yeah, I make myself really stretch after I run now. I have to otherwise I just freeze up. lol

you can't do yoga anymore? seems like that would be the best thing to help you heal, assuming you're really careful which stretches you do.

Of course, there's nothing like the circulation you get from running! nod

Well, I think doing too much yoga is what got me in trouble in the first place. They still don't know what happened to me after over a year of testing. So I was forced to definitely NOT do yoga for a long time. I couldn't even get out of bed for a long time infact, so it's been a REALLY slow recovery. It's a muscle and nerve thing.

I can do yoga stretches now though. Just not anything too strenuous or anything that puts weight on my neck, such as the candle, or knees-to-ears. Something would definitely snap. shake They also told me I could never do headstands and handstands again. sigh

BUT today was my 2nd pilates-based class, and I actually did plank position for the first time in almost 2 years! woot!

I had to take a muscle relaxer though just 20 minutes ago. redface It's the only thing that helps sometimes.

imagine bending over to touch your toes from a standing position, only your knees are bent, so you're really just squatting down.

Still a good way to stretch (it's safer for your back that way to use your thighs push your butt in the air rather than hang on straight legs) but not what I pictured.

Ooohh, okay I see... it is better for your back to bend in the squatting position first. I bend both ways I think it doesn't bother me when I bend from the standing position because I've been doing it for so long but that's just my assessment. wink

yeah! this is a kind of make or break thing I reckon confused
after 10 years with one employer, we have a thing called long service leave, which is 3 months off, full pay. He is taking it twice as long but for half the pay. It is a hell of a long time!
