Dec. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Joseph Barbera, co-founder of Hanna- Barbera Studios and creator of Oscar-winning characters Tom and Jerry as well as Huckleberry Hound and the Flintstone family, died today at home. He was 95. Warner Bros. Animation announced Barbera's death in a statement today. Barbera abandoned a career in banking to become a cartoonist when he was in his 20s, the studio said. As an animator at MGM, he collaborated with William Hanna to create Tom and Jerry, characters that went on to win seven Academy Awards, according to the statement. Hanna and Barbera started their studio in 1957 after MGM scrapped its animation department. They created the ``Huckleberry Hound Show'' in 1958 and later introduced Yogi Bear as a character on the show ``Quick Draw McGraw,'' Warner Bros. said. ``The Flintstones,'' which went on the air in 1960, was the first animated series to air in prime time. The show continues to air in more than 80 countries, Warner Bros. said. Barbera and Hanna, who died in 2001, also created the animated sitcom ``The Jetsons.'' Barbera is survived by his wife Sheila and three children, Jayne, Neal and Lynn.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Dave Cockrum, a comic book illustrator who overhauled the X-Men and helped popularize the relatively obscure Marvel Comics title into a publishing sensation and a major film franchise, died Sunday. He was 63. Cockrum died in his home in Belton after a long battle with diabetes and related complications, said his wife, Paty. He was wearing his Superman pajamas and sitting with his Batman blanket, his wife said. At Marvel Comics, Cockrum and writer Len Wein were handed the X-Men. The comic had been created in 1963 as a group of young outcasts enrolled in an academy for mutants, but the premise failed to capture fans. Cockrum and Wein took the existing comic, added their own heroes and published "Giant-Size X-Men No. 1" in 1975. Many signature characters Cockrum designed and co-created - such as Storm, Mystique, Nightcrawler and Colossus - went on to become part of the "X-Men" films starring Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry. Cockrum received no royalties, a family friend said. Cockrum was born in Pendleton, Ore., the son of an Air Force officer. He set aside his interest in art while serving in Vietnam for the U.S. Navy. He moved to New York after leaving the service and got his big break in the early 1970s, drawing the Legion of Super-Heroes for DC Comics before moving to Marvel.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ronnie Lippin, a veteran publicist and manager who worked with rock icons such as Eric Clapton, Brian Wilson and Prince, died Monday. Lippin died of a rare form of breast cancer at Cedar Sinai Medical Center here, according to a statement from The Lippin Group. She was 59 years old. Though she got her start working as a publicist for film and stage productions, Lippin, a Brooklyn, N.Y., native, migrated to music publicity when she moved to Los Angeles with her husband, Dick Lippin. She started out as a chief publicist for MCA Records and later worked with Elton John's Rocket Records and became the top publicist for RSO Records, home of the Bee Gees and the best-selling "Grease" and "Saturday Night Fever" Soundtracks. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - Chris Hayward, an Emmy Award-winning television writer who helped develop the bumbling animated Canadian Mountie Dudley Do-Right and other offbeat characters for the Rocky and Bullwinkle TV show, has died. He was 81. Hayward died of cancer Nov. 20 at home, his wife, Linda, told the Los Angeles Times in Sunday editions. Hayward contributed satire, wordplay and puns for "Rocky and His Friends," a witty kids cartoon that built a large adult following. The show debuted on ABC in 1959 and was renamed "The Bullwinkle Show" when it moved to NBC in 1961. Besides its titular flying squirrel and moose, the hit show featured segments including Mr. Peabody, a time-traveling dog with a pet boy, and Dudley, a klutzy hero always in pursuit of his nemesis Snidely Whiplash. Hayward also co-wrote the show's "Fractured Fairy Tales," sendups of classic stories and fables. With partner Allan Burns, Hayward later helped create "The Munsters," and in 1968 the pair received an Emmy for their work on the CBS sitcom "He & She." After writing for "Get Smart" (1965-70), the team split up and Hayward turned to "Barney Miller," an ABC series that satirized life in a precinct house.
