Why do/don't you own a pet?

I love animals. More than anything I would like to get a dog for my kids.

BUT-!
I do not want the walks around the block in the middle of winter.
I do not want to deal with fleas.
I do not want to pay for vet fees.
I do not want to walk down the pet food aisle in the supermarket.

So I do not have a dog.

We tried hamsters and hermit crabs, but the kids wound up ignoring them after the first few months.

A co-worker of mine is dealing with a cat that has a nervous condition and is licking all the fur off its body. He's tried medication, and collars, and all sorts of things. I do not have the patience for that. I would've sent it to the pound by now.
So I reckon that it will be a lo-o-o-ong time before a pet makes its way into my house.

What's your story?

i've always loved animals - it would just seem strange not to have them around. and as long as there are so many in need of a good home, how could i not?!

I love animals nod but at this time in my life, it's probably not a good idea. I'd LOVE to have a dog but as I live at my mate's house, that's up to them, not me. And she's scared of dogs, so that's not gonna happen soon. lol No amount of convincing has worked so far.

Plus, I'm not sure if I could afford the vet's bills, to be honest. And if I get a dog, I want to care for it properly.

So maybe when I'm a retired old gent. nod The dog can take me for a walk. lol

A few years ago some guy followed me home and waited for me outside my apartment. So my fiance immediately got me this:

WELL

It stems from when i was a child. I loved the tapestry with the unicorn in the fence. And I wanted to own that and a real baby unicorn. So now I own a westie. I guess he's close enough to a baby unicorn. smile

i love dogs myself ... had one for a while ... but i admit ... as a bachelor it cramped my style sometimes ... and now ... well .... alot of the reasons already mentioned ... i truly believe if u are gonna have a dog/cat --- u gotta train that thing ... and i dont think i would have the time today to train the dog the way i did my last one .... confused

i live by myself and like the presence of another living thing in my home, but not another living thing that eats all my food and racks up long distance bills that i know they won't pay. lol

soooo....my kitty is the perfect roommate!

specifically speaking, i have a pet because a friend had to get rid of her cat as her baby twin daughters were allergic to him, and the cat apparently wasn't too big on the twins either, as he'd hiss at them whenever they came near him. so, since i knew grady for years before my friend had her babies, i couldn't bear the thought of him being taken to an animal shelter so i let him live with me.

he's a great pet - he's middle aged and fat, so he just sits around on my sofa and looks cute all day.

cry I miss my turtles, and the aquariums, and the baby pigeons that we let go a few months ago, and my friend's cat. Just going to let the org fill that void.

I originally had thought that I would be able to train a cat to do all my menial tasks for me (take out the garbage, clean the oven etc.), but when I tried "conditioning" it, it just kept swiping at me.

I guess I didn't understand the whole "pet" concept real well.

Now I do all that stuff myself and the cat just kind of sits around (and still swipes at me).

hug Had to give away the turtles when we moved, been talking about getting new ones ever since but didn't get around too it (bit of a sore spot I guess). The pigeons (a male and a female) were nesting in our appartment balcony just a few months before we moved out so we had to leave them in the park just outside. The new house is full of little bugs but I don't want to bring more into the house razz

Could always use a little glass jar to get a few from the back yard.. eww.
