Speaking of having the crap scared out of you though, I just finished reading "The Shining" again recently. I hadn't read it in years and it is, by far, the scariest story I've ever read. shake

I was too scared to even get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. lol The book is far more detailed and scary than the movie, which Stephen King didn't like in the first place. He thought they botched the whole thing (which they did if you read the book) and that Jack Nicholson played Jack Torrance all wrong from the beginning, which he did.

Having said that, the moive is STILL scary anyway, and I think it's mostly because of the music actually. nod

But damn, that book. It's so much more detailed with a heavy influence on Jack and Wendy's marriage and Danny's "friend" Tony, and the history of the Overlook itself. The whole build-up even to the half-way point of the book is just creepy as hell. shake
[Edited 11/30/06 5:11am]

okay, i'm scared of everything and the movie version of the shining didn't scare me at all. i thought it was kinda funny.

That's because Jack Nicholson played his character "crazy" and over-the-top from the beginning of the film I think. lol Which is why Stephen King was upset about how he played it. It's not like that at all in the book.

I think the movie is still scary though. It's just a different story than the book though. They made a mini-series though a few years back of The Shining, and that one was almost to a T the way the book is. Although it was hard to watch it without thinking of the original movie. Everyone knows that one and to them, it's usually the "right" one and the best one. shrug

ok but why was he there? i never got it! was he there like a christmas turkey or was he having a pee?

i seen it way back in 99 when it came out but i hardly remember it in detail now.

early in the movie, you hear a story about how the mysterious witch would kidnap children, keep them in a house, and mutilate one while making another stand in the corner and face away to not see what is happening.

At the of the movie, you go down into the cellar, and you see the friend standing motionless faced away in the corner.... you realize in a split second you are about to be slowly mutilated by the witch.

Interesting. hmmm But how could the witch MAKE that guy just stand there in the corner? Couldn't he overpower her?

The reason he couldn't overpower her is becasue she's a witch! She was performing all kinds of voodoo on those poor kids throughout the movie like making them walk in circles in the woods until they found her spooky-ass house.

I loved it and am not going to appologize for it. I knew, when I saw it in the theaters, that it was a re-enactment of what I thought had really happened.

The 2 parts that scared me were the kid hands all over the tent and the last part of the film.

I don't know why but I actually had nightmares after. I don't ever ever ever have nightmares about horror films. I don't know why this story hit a nerve.

the reason it's terrifying is because you realize that you are defenseless against the evil supernatural power that you have wittingly walked into the grasp of. You have no idea why or who , you just know that you are going to die horribly and there is NO escape. The "witch" is all powerful evil force.

Ah, I see. nod I guess I'd have to watch it again, because as I posted earlier in this thread, I was high when I went to see it. lol

Wasn't scared at all and the shaky camera got on my nerves AND made me very dizzy. I saw it once and that was enough for me.

However, the whole concept of the movie was brilliant and I can see how that would impacted you mentally. It was also simple enough and should have inspired filmakers and film producers to get back to developing better concepts or writing better stories.

It didn't. Instead they just re-made all the classics.

We should plan on having an Org invasion at the hotel where Stephen King wrote the Shining.

Should we plan it for the STANLEY HOTEL, where he wrote it or TIMEBERLINE LODGE where they used it for filming the movie. The STANLEY HOTEL looks amazing.

Did you see both episodes of Ghost Hunters that they did at the Stanley Hotel? They had alot of experiences there. The one night, the guy was staying in one of the rooms, and the closet door opened up all by itself, then closed and hinged itself. Also, a glass on his nightstand shattered. They caught the door opening and closing on tape.

In another room there, as they were sitting at a table, something slammed down on the table real hard while they were taping.

YES!!! Out of most of those episodes this was THE ONE! The shattering of the glass was just too bizarre. The door opening creeped me out. The table thing would have had me piss my pants if it would've happened to me.

So yeah, let's go!!! Heehe!!

I was deployed in Bosnia when Blair Witch came out....me and a couple of my guys watched it in the dark in our sleep trailer....there were no windows in the trailer, so it was dark dark....and in spite of sitting there waiting for something "horrible" to happen, the vibe of the movie creeped me out completely...I like a good gore fest as much as anyone else, but I LOVE scary movies that are off the scale on the CREEPOUT factor..... eek

...however, I think the key for me enjoying BWP was mostly the setting in which I watched it...because I've seen it a few more times and the response was never quite the same...hrmph
