I hate it too. It's hopeless/pointless. They will never hear us. shrug

So, what I'm really posting about is:

Your org secret santa request gave me a MUCH needed laugh. I'm still laughing. Thanks. biggrin

Love you. hug

I hear you both.
I just respectfully disagree.
There were some very key statements that you made that explain it all.

"I've finally discovered I don't believe in killing myself or denying myself certain simple pleasures just to fit into some ideal."

So you've already made up your mind that going without certain foods is "killing yourself" and eating foods that may not be healthy for you are "simple pleasures" that you need.

"Do I want to make the changes necessary to get there? No. I've learned its not worth it to me."

Examine that statement for a minute. Regardless of all the studies that show over and over and over again, that even being slightly overweight dramatically increases your chances of being unhealthy, it's not worth it to you? over FOOD.

i'm not talking about this "Hollywood ideal" crap where they think you have to be as thin as Paris Hilton to be "hot". That's NOT what i'm saying. I'm talking about being healthier as a nation. And this idea that FOOD is somehow more important than being healthy.

Since you don't know me (at least, I assume you don't), I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that there's a lot you don't know about me. I am living a much, much healthier life than I was a year ago at this time, and undoubtedly tremendously healthier than the entirety of my 20's. I would say I was thinnest during my most unhealthy years (think drugs). And in my path to be healthier, some weight has dropped off. But then it stopped. shrug
Food is not making me unhealthy. And its one of my favorite hobbies. The pleasure I get out the few treats I consume is worth it to me. I'm a firm believer in everything in moderation. And if that means I'll be carrying excess baggage forever, so be it.
I don't expect you to agree. shrug

hug rose you kick ass.

when i was at my thinnest, i was surviving on ramen noodles and oatmeal. there's nothing healthy about that. some people are bigger but healthier than your average person. some people are very thin but are horribly unhealthy.

People just need to be healthy.

Okay.
First of all, correct me if i'm wrong but i've YET to refer to anyone as "fat".

Secondly, i've pointed out twice (and i'm happy to do so again) that this isn't a discussion on what Hollywood or the media perpetuates to be the "ideal" weight (at least from what i'm attempting to discuss here).

I'm simply referring to the mindset that has led the United States to become the fattest, unhealthiest nation in the entire world.

Of course there are different body types and everyone isn't designed to be a contestant on "America's Next Top Model". Nor should they be.

And i'm not vegan because i'm a card carrying member of PETA that thinks that killing animals is wrong and people that wear fur should die or anything. I lost weight because i want to live as long as possible.

Let me put it another way. You find out at the end of your life that by simply altering your eating habits, that you could have lived another 10 years. So you look your grandchildren in the eye and say "i'm sorry, guys. i could've been with you another 10 years, but i liked french fries and chocolate too much."

It's FOOD. There are TONS of foods out there that taste great and are healthy for you. It's not NEARLY as hard to eat healthy today as it was some 12 or so years ago when i first became vegetarian. And i'm not saying that you necessarily have to be vegetarian or vegan to eat much much healthier (but it does certainly help).

I'm not name calling, or personally trying to attack anyone in here. Just participating in a discussion that i find interesting and relevant (and in here, for me that's a rarety).

But see, by saying all this, you are simply demonstrating exactly what HereToRockYourWorld said above. lol
fat does not equal unhealthy. nor does thin equal healthy. that's all we're saying here.

Would you like me to run you through a typical day of my diet? OK, here goes:

breakfast:
1/2 cup low fat, low sugar granola
1/2 cup low fat low sugar yogurt
1 medium banana
tea with skim milk and 2 tsp sugar

lunch:
salad of mixed greens, onion, red pepper, carrots, cucumber and sprinkle of cheese
low fat dressing

afternoon snack:
apple

dinner:
1 veggie chick patty
1 serving pasta
1 cup yummy spaghetti sauce
(about 500 calories)

dessert/evening snack:
fruit, occasional serving of ice cream

Now, once in a while I indulge in a big breakfast on weekends. Or a fancy cupcake from the bakery. And I work out at least twice a week.

You know, I have incredibly pale skin. And I could get tan if I wanted to. I did it one summer when I was young. But in order to do that, I would need to start out spending 5 minutes a day for a week in a tanning bed, then gradually increase by 5 mintues a day each week till I was spending about 30 minutes a day and in about 2 months I'd have a bit of color. I don't want to do that. I don't have the time nor inclination. It's the same thing here. I have simply decided that I don't want to spend 2 hours a day at the gym and give up the foods I love altogether.

And you can tell me that means I'm not healthy. But I can't agree.

And as for the end of my life bit? I'm also a firm believer in quality over quantity. If I died tomorrow, there are very, very few things in this life I'd regret and I would die knowing I lived my life to the fullest, rarely if ever passing up an opportunity for fun or fulfillment. If my grandchildren wouldn't get that, I haven't taught them well enough.
