R.I.P. Willie Pep

sad

Willie Pep was a hero in the Italian American community. He passed away yesterday. He held the featherweight title for six years at one time, taking on any and all comers

WILL 'O' THE WISP: The gifted Willie Pep (seen here against arch rival Sandy Saddler) won the undisputed featherweight championship by knocking out Sal Bartolo in 12 rounds in 1946. Only one man, Sammy Angott, defeated the incredible Pep in his first 137 professional fights. One of the greatest boxing masters of all time, Willie racked up 230 wins in 242 contests in a glittering career that spanned 26 years from 1940 to 1966.

That "guy on the left" is Sandy Saddler, Willie Pep's nemesis, who took 3 out of 4 matches with "The Will 'O The Wisp". Their second bout, in which Pep regained the featherweight title, is one of the most magnificent displays of boxing in the sport's history. Watching Willie Pep box is akin to watching a master musician or anyone at the top of his craft. Besides Sugar Ray Robinson (whom Pep fought in the amateurs), he's the closest thing I've seen to a pure ring genius.

May he rest in peace.
