I'm a feminist!

And I'm damn proud of it! nod woot! dancing jig

I stand for and support women's equality not only in this country but around the world. American women have it made compared to many women on this planet. The next time any woman feels an aversion to the word "feminist" for it's lesbianic or dykish connotation, just remember those women put themselves on the frontline so that you can live in a society that affords you the right to live the life that you want to live outside of the expectations and dictations of men.

Even though I lack the most visible aspects of being a woman, I feel very strongly in my soul a connection to the female force and I am so proud to defend that and represent it when I can nod

I wish more younger women would embrace feminism for all can bring to women's issues. I know that for black women, anytime we embrace our sisterhood, we are told that we don't support our black men and are being used by white women to further THEIR cause.

When Betty Friedan died, NPR did a series of spots on feminism and they touched on the role of feminism in minority communities and I was rather shocked to find a disconnect between the movement and minority women. They interviewed blacks and latinas who felt it was a more or less white movement and that really saddened me because I cannot think of women who need the freedom that feminism possesses more than minorities sigh

I guess I don't have the answer to how to fix that other than women of all races, all classes and all backgrounds to stand together in the fight for true equality. I'm glad to see the mighty Queen Rhonda representin smile

I will say it's quite interesting being an effeminate man and the expectations within the gay community. There is a level of empowerment in embracing my femaleness and showing that I can be just as strong as any macho man out there nod

Understand that the fight was different for white women and minority women at some point. Minority women ALWAYS worked. We were the cooks, the maids, cleaning women, "mammies", etc. Our fight was different AND we had to fight be included in the struggle for womens liberation. Sojourner Truth's legendary speech talks about letting US in the fight and being recognized as....well...women. It still is a different fight but a fight that I'm a part of....gladly.

It's too bad that sooooo many women refuse to take advantage of the freedom they have and still choose to live like it is 1950.

The women who want the men to do the pursuing, the asking out, etc, etc. The women that have the food on the table for the husband when he comes home from work or has his lunch ready for the next day. Who would rather be a full time stay at home mom and not work. Who want the traditional home life. Stuff like that. It's 2006. Almost 2007.

I think that's slowly changing, though. In the women's studies classes I took in college (early 90's) we talked about how many minority women felt left out of the feminist movement. We made a point to seek out as many differernt female prespectives as possible. Nearly every book I read now (and I still consider it a topic I 'study') at the least acknowledges when it doesn't bring different racial backgrounds into the topic of discussion at hand and most of the time attempts to show all sides.

Women should have that life if they want it. I don't agree with subservience out of expectation but a relationship based on respect I have no problem with and neither should you.

What you're describing isn't feminism, spats. Feminism is about freedom. I may want the 'traditional' role. I am free to choose whatever role I wish. That's the important part. The choice.

Yeah but that choice is still outdated and does not help anyone to progess anywhere. It does not help the "womens' movement" at all. Which i presume women would like to do.

And it's also about equality and those outdated wants don't help that either,

as usual, you completely miss the point.

it's about being able to choose what you want to do, not having it chosen for you on basis of gender.

It helps her family if that's what she chooses to have. Unfortunately, many who press women to opt for this want them to do it out of expectations and completely ignore that in today's society families often need two incomes to survive.

My mother did not get to stay home with us when we were kids because she was a single mother but when she married my step-father and had 2 more kids she was able to stay home with them and I have always been happy that they had that nod

How are they wasting their choice if they are making it! lol The point is that women aren't mandated to the kitchen and mandated to birth offspring and mandated to stay in the home. They have the option to be the woman they want to be and hopefully they are staying home for the right reasons and not out of some outdated and patriarchal expectation that a woman's place is barefoot and pregnant.....
