Pay per veiw executions Do you think this will ever happen. The pros would be that people would SEE what happens to the criminals and that the money generated would help the economy. The cons are exploitation and exposure to excessive violence. What do you think??? There are a few people I'd personally like to see executed on TV. Either public figures or people in my private life. And even some of you
But... the media-bitch in me says this is a horrible use of the public airwaves.

[This message was edited Sun Aug 25 20:18:59 PDT 2002 by theC] If we'd find a way to televise all rapes, assaults and murders, people would SEE what happens and the money generated would help the economy. Basically, those arguments can be made about nearly anything.

There is no evidence it deters crime at all. Think about it... the USA executes all these people and still has murder rates far higher than countries with no death penalty. Too bad I didn't save The Economist article I read on the subject recently.

People are people and history has a way of repeating itself. I see a lot of horrors in our future that most of us couldn't understand how or why they happened in the past.

Here are my views ... I'm from England so wasn't aware that this debate was opening up in America, but I'm gonna give u my 2 cents anyway - I agree with Aerogram's comments. There is no evidence to suggest that capital punishment acts as a deterrent. In fact, not only is the murder rate in the US significantly higher than in European countries that do not have the death penalty, but the southern states of the US, which account for 80% of executions, has a marginally higher murder rate than other states. (If American Presidents were really serious about preventing crime, and less concerned about losing votes, a far better way of achieving this would be to look at revising the country's gun laws - my opinion). - The real issue here isn't about preventing crime, it's about making money. If we assume it's morally right to broadcast executions, then why make people pay to see them? The country will generate income, but my view is that crime may actually rise as a result, thereby reducing or negating any benefits. - It could be argued that broadcasting executions will desensitise society even further, and may even lead to more murders being committed. - The one possible "pro" I can see is that it will open a debate on whether or not it is right for the state to enforce the death penalty. It may actually lead to less people being executed in the long term.

i'm pretty sure the rich gov. officials already have it...
their version of LEGALIZED SNUFF FILMS. after all it's obvious by the way they vote for the DEATH PENALTY, that teir intention is to one day REALLY capitalize on it. it'll get a PG. rating, because it's a GOOD PARENTAL DETERENT to our EVER INCREASING VIOLENCE in the schools. wich btw is NOT DUE to THE LACK OF PARENTAL GUIDENCE... I'd certainly watch.
At any rate, I don't suppose I have much value to add to this topic. I DO believe in capital punishment, and you can all disagree and say it's morally wrong or whatever. I don't see any sense in keeping murderers, rapists, molestors, and other filth alive, using up our tax money, taking up space and oxygen. If you murder someone, if you rape someone, molest a child, you should die. Period. There's absolutely no excuse to keep that sort of person alive. I also think we should go for some things that would go against the "cruel and unusual punishment" shite. For instance, chopping off some idiot who steal's hand...However, there ARE problems with doing it. There's no perfect solution. Let's just do like the British and send all our criminal trash to Australia...to live with bkw... -------

I cant fathom how these viewings would help deter crime. ppl would see how peacefully these criminals actually die by legal injection. peice of cake...easier than a lifelong prison term of having 2 b locked away from society, having 2 rethink the crime(s) u r accused of DAY AFTER DAY, being used as a sex object by other prisoners, watching ur back every second etc. not easy! i always wanted 2 see this however, thinking i'd feel better seeing these scum put away for their atrocious crimes on other humans, but changed my mind later on. it's depressing, thats all! yes, even 2 see the accused die, because they 2 r human, even if they have diseased minds. many are evil, but there r those that resort 2 crime for reasons they cant help. not to make excuses!, but i had the chance 2 work with some of these ppl accused of murder etc. and let me tell u, as bad as their crimes were...i tended to feel sorry 4 them, because some can b sooo polite, so nice, so sorry for what they did. u get attached. i couldnt do this work. so damn interesting, yet i wasnt tough enough to detach myself from their problems, and making excuses for what they did. i was out! i knew that wasnt 4 me. the ones that were really nasty and had no conscience, were much easier to deal with, as far as emotionally for me. so, as far as tv executions go, who would that benefit? victims families already see the ordeal close up. now, if someone close 2 me was murdered i WOULD want to b there to see the comeuppins, even though that doesnt neccesarily mean closure, however i feel, for me, it would make me feel better. an eye 4 an eye? except of course the prisoners death is always more humane than his victim's. but then, we r not a barbaric civilization. thank GOD. May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love.

I didn't read the whole thread because I was itching to respond.
Sick, sick fucking shit. This would be from a government that regularly targets artists, musicians and the porn industry for "obscenity". You know, it probably WILL happen because our society is just twisted enough to get off on this disgusting idea - the "Faces of Death" and Rotten.com crowd, and all those who are no longer shocked by Springer or "When Animals Attack. Plus, i'm sure there's a buck to made somewhere from it. Capital punishment is bad enough - with hundreds of innocent people (most all of them poor, and usually black) having been executed in the name of justice - but what kind of a derranged mouth breather would actually want to watch this abomination of filth? Excuse me, I need to go puke. Maybe I could air that on PPV...

[This message was edited Sun Aug 25 20:18:59 PDT 2002 by theC] There. That's better. And to respond to this directly, I think we're really circling the societal drain when we establish an economic incentive to broadcast government sanctioned snuff films. i'm not sure how much lower there is to go after that. We'd have to look up just to take a piss. I think it's one of the worst fucking ideas I've ever heard in my life.
