I don't know what it is, but i just know that when my birthday comes, i always make sure no one fucks it up for me and that i have as much fun as i can. I MAKE my birthday a holiday. nod

I really don't like the American Thanksgiving. Making a pig of yourself as a way to celebrate genocide? No thanks.

That's one way to look at it.
Another way is to see family and friends coming together to share a meal and express their gratitude for all they have been blessed with. That's how we celebrate it anyway.

I'm the opposite.

When I was younger it was just another day to me. I hated it actually, cuz we had off school, and my mom wouldn't let me go out with my friends till after dinner. I always thought it was a waste of a day offa school. rolleyes

OMG, but now I love it. I LOVE all the planning for dinner and getting the house all decorated.....I LIVE for weeks like this!! woot!

I totally agree. But most people aren't aware of, or care about the true beginnings of the holiday. I don't know many Native Americans that celebrate it. Might as well have a Happy Holocaust Day while they're at it. sad

I'm celebrating T-day with my man's family, and they're a little non-conventional. His aunt wants to have a Mexican themed dinner, and they're Irish! lol

Needless to say, I'm going over to my Mama's house on Friday for some turkey and stuffing! I only get that meal once a year, and I'm not giving it up for Mexican food.

I used to hate Thanksgiving as a kid. I'd rather we all ordered a pizza or something than eat the food that's traditionally served. Charlie Brown had the right idea for the Peanuts Thanksgiving Day special. Popcorn, pretzels and toast. Then I got older and I started liking the traditional foods. Now I'm stuffed by the time I leave dinner. lol

For the last few years, we've been going to my wife's family for dinner, and I like getting together with them. So, I guess it's all good for me.

I have mixed feelings. Holidays were always so exciting to me, but then a bit depressing too. To be around all my family & friends was fun, but it made me feel lonely & isolated for some reason.

Now the holidays are mostly an obligation, but I don't get depressed on them.

well when family members start passing away, it makes the holidays less enjoyable to me. like after my father passed away 5 years ago, the holidays are just flat out boring. i know him not being here shouldn't stop me from enjoying the holidays and all, but its a very easy thing to say than to do. it hasn't been the same and in my eyes never will be. call me the grinch who stole the turkey if you will.

hug

The first Christmas after my dad died was the worst. Not only did we not have my dad there, but Rachel had a miscarriage that morning. That would have been our second child. She didn't want people to know about it that day, so I had to keep quiet about it when there were family members there that I wanted to say something to but didn't.

Rachel was pregnant for the next Christmas, though, and she didn't have any problems giving birth to Shelby, our first daughter. It was a much happier time than the previous year.

Wow, what a horrible day. sad I'm glad to hear that the next Christmas was much better.

This Christmas will be the first one without my Grandma, and one of my aunts. They died with a couple months of eachother. I know it's gonna be a tough one. sad

Can you imagine the uproar if we had Happy Holocaust Day or Happy King Assassination Day? There'd be riots in the streets if someone so much as even suggested it. Mass death is mass death -why mourn one when you're prepared to bust out the pumpkin pie and good cheer over the other? Makes no sense.

I wouldn't say that I'm excited about Thanksgiving, but as the wife-mom-homemaker-cook of my house, it is a big deal for me. It's not every day that we have 12 different things for dinner! And with my husband frying the turkey, that takes a lot off of me.

Plus, I have a lot of other fun things to look forward to over the next few days: Friday morning, me and my sisters meet for a really early breakfast at Cracker Barrel (it's our traditon). Friday night, I'm going to my cousin's for snacks and drinks to celebrate her and my mom's b-day. Monday--no chemo for me that week!! (since I get it 3 weeks on and 1 week off). Tuesday, meet at my sisters with other friends for a holiday cookie sample night (a group we made up that meets every month with theme food nights). My sister will be making Kahlua coffee drinks...yum!
