We'll be performing our show: Russian Ballets... Featuring: Firebird, Petrouchka, Round Dance of the Princesses, and The Rite of Spring. We take field at approximately 7 PM CST in class 3A competition. Just a bit of news. I'll post our scoring and results and so on when I get in tonight. -------
A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti... "I've just had an apostrophe!" "I think you mean an epiphany..." | |

Good Luck. We're the better Lakers. Well, no. But in band, we kick ass. I'll have some pictures from the competition too to share, C. Now shut up about the LA Lakers and go pick up Badlad for your picnic date. And remember: BE CAREFUL! -------

I've just came in from the performance...Despite a few problems, it was great - especially considering it was our first performance. I will now give a description.
We arrived, went through the normal routine, got in uniform, had our 25 minutes of warm-up time they give you in a specified area...Did a few straight run throughs marking time. Hearing these straight runs, I was a bit pessimistic as to how our performance would go. We didn't sound nearly as good as normal. We go down to the field. Now, we just learned this morning in practice how to march on the field. Rather assinine, yes? The day of the first performance you're JUST LEARNING how to get on and off the field? Anyhow... Adair County's field is surrounded by a track. It's a rather nasty field as well. All bumpy, with grass taller than it should be. But no one ever said Adair County, Kensucky was a good place. The dingbat host takes us down to the wrong side of the track. So much for first impressions, as we start off on the wrong side, have to walk to the complete opposite side - this all during Hart County's performance mind you. Ackerman (our band director) is angry. "So much for first impressions." Coming on to the field, however, went very well. No one missed any step-offs, etc etc. Our field commander does her salute, we're at attention. She climbs to her platform. I'm expecting the worst to happen. Off-step on the double time, etc, no dynamic contrast...It was PROBABLY the best performance of the first song we'd done yet. No problems with tempo, everything was right on. Petrouchka. Everything is great, except the girl who marches in front of me in the form moved during our 12 count hold. Mind you, this is especially bad because you [bNEVER move during a hold, no matter how wrong you are. On top of THAT, she's a junior...3rd year marching, and she should know better. She should know how to count by now, how to make her spot, and she should know NOT to move during a hold. We come to the end of Petrouchka. We start our slow number, marched at about 90, Round Dance... NO one that I could see got off step. By far our best performance of that particular song. You see, it's a slow number, and usually, our problem is it slows down even more. But everything was right on with our field commander. All was good. Moving right along... The Rite Of Spring. Here's where the problems come in. Starts off great. I can see the form we usually miss is great - the diagnols, everything. We get to the first mark time. A girl in my section steps off. That's a bad thing. Moving right along, everything's good, except another girl forgets about turning her body for the biggest hit of the song. We pull our feet together, our upper body goes to the right, we have 3 counts to bring it around...Hit the big note, 3 counts, and then go. Two more moves, and a 9 count hold. The same girl I spoke of moving before moves 3 counts after the hold. Then, takes off on the hold 3 counts early. What was she thinking? I mean really! Anyhow, no problems getting off the field We've got that pretty well handled. Won't know how we actually scored until Monday in band class, or the judge's comments, but all and all, I feel it was good. The music went really well, very good dynamic contrasts, etc. So, they shouldn't rip us apart for that too badly..for once. Now, I'm tired. The end. -------
