KABUL, Afghanistan (Nov. 18) - Blood dripped down the 16-year-old girl's face after another beating by her drug addict husband. Worn down by life's pain, she ran to the kitchen, doused herself with gas from a lamp and struck a match.

In that culture maybe there is no way out, especially in a male dominated society. To her, it was better to die rather then escape, be killed for escaping. To go back to her family is not an option.

I actually saw a woman do this up the street from me a couple years ago. I was at our local pharmacy and across the street this woman parked her car at this clinic (which performs abortions). She got out & then doused herself with gas and lit herself on fire while slowly moving towards the clinic...it was horrifying! And this was in the middle of the afternoon. There were a lot of people around.

The irony of the whole Iraq war was that women who were living under Saddam Hussein had as much personal freedom as women did in the West. Can you imagine what life must be like for young women in that country? What kinda of horrific life are you living when setting your body on fire is the only way to find relief from your circumstance?
