friends with the people in the t.v?

in honor of the new general discussion forum i thought i'd share something i found interesting...if you don't..well it's general discussion..so...here goes...

in the september issue of mens health magazine i saw this:

'Chyna Is A Close Personal Friend of Mine'

Who needs a shrink when you've got 'Friends' and 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer?' Researchers analyzed data collected from the National Opinion Research Center and found that people who watch a lot of television seem to be as psychologically content as people who have many friends. What's the tube got to do with it? 'The human brain evolved long before television came along, so subconsciously it recognizes any face it sees regularly as a friend, even if it's on a screen,' says Satoshi Kanazawa,Ph.D. the study author.

...crazy, ain't it?

All it is, is people identifying with characters on the tv. Powerful emotions can be triggered. It does not compensate though for two way relating.

mobile checking my real friends aren't watching too much

A lot of studies have shown that this is true of radio. Or maybe not studies... but that's kind of what a lot of radio is based around, true or not. Talk, music, DJ's, whatever... it's a socialization tool when there's no one to socialize with.

On a serious note, what happens when your favorite show with your friends gets cancelled? Or if a character gets killed off? Do you sink into a deep depression?

I was very upset when they stopped showing Today's Special - anyone remember that show? It was Canadian, and had Jeff, a mannequin who came to life when he put his hat on... or took it off, I don't remember. Plus Jodie, who always wore the same pink pantsuit, Sam the night watchman, his kitty, and Muffy the mouse (whose grandmother made the best tuna salad in the world).

Whoa, flashback...

Well, take my obsession for the show "Xena: Warrior Princess." In all the years Xena was on, I never missed an episode. 1996-2001. RIP. After I saw the last episode, where Xena died and all, I was indeed sad. I felt..empty! Unsatisfied!

Mind you, besides all the educational stuff on Discovery, Discovery Health, etc, it's the only show I wathced regularly, besides Jeff Corwn love.

Anyhow, I was rather sad when I found out the entire reason I watched Xena all those years - Kevin Smith, the guy who played Ares (no, not the one who makes movies like Jay and Silent Bob...) who was absolutely the best looking man alive, died. cry Not depressed, mind you. I think I was more upset when they stopped making new Xenas...

I don't understand what would actually make someone think that the actors and actress are their friends. I mean for starters there's no communication between the two and last thing is if they were to ever see each other in person the people on television would think they needed some assistance with the help of the proper authority.

There should be no reason why a person would spend all of their time in front of the t.v. unless they're a mental case.

It's not really directly thinking the actors/actresses are their friends. It's just where they spend their time, watching these people on TV. Insanity WOULD come in if they actually thought these fictional characters were their friends...
