ok, jfolden, just like you said, I checked with the "mac expert" at CompUSA, and he said the new macbook with the Core 2 Duo was noticeably cooler than the other one.

I'm pretty stoked now. excited

Good! Apple usually gets it right with the "rev 2" of their products - although I guess in the case of the overheating that was more of an Intel issue. Either way it's good to know for sure. I was seriously eyeing a black MacBook myself but I'm really a desktop person. I've owned an iBook G3 and a Titanium PowerBook in the past but, as nice as they were, they just sit too much. sad

Which model of MacBook were you thinking of getting?

The middle macbook (white one maxed out). I like the black one but with the same specks it's like still 150 bucks more than the white one. sigh

Actually, on the C2D models there's only a $50 difference by the time you consider the price for the hard drive, I think. 80GB in the top end white, and 120 GB in the black. I guess the $50 difference is something to do with the casing (the black material is different than the white somehow - other than just color lol ).

You are right though, I'm not sure it's worth the extra $$$ for color or extra 40GB of drive space in a notebook unless you're doing some major video editing, etc...

You should pay attention... I haven't argued with your opinion concerning not liking them once. You can dislike them as much as you want, honestly, it's no concern to me. Scream it from the rooftops and I'll still go about my day. I've only made exception to certain issues you've brought up because they don't generally hold true as the norm unless you're talking about Macs from years ago.

Do I know how to fix them when they fuck up? No, not really. But other than that I don't really have a problem figuring out how to make it do what I want it to. After all, it's just a machine.

Judging by your own comments you seem to have troubles that most Mac users don't have, or have little trouble solving... It's not a big deal but that stuff reflects on your personal knowledge and experience with them, not a blanket statement for everyone and the products themselves.

You don't see me responding to Carrie, do you? She had troubles, she didn't feel comfortable with it, end of story... nothing wrong with that.

Well, no that's just rich. There's no reason to get upset.
But your statements did first imply that this applied to all macs. Jfolden is a lifetime mac user and offered a counter view. shrug

As for me, I'm a lifetime Windows supporter, and have seen my share of issues. XP is a vast improvement over NT 4.0 and a marginal one over 2000. But why the hell Microsoft decided to keep the registry baffles me. The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE segment is a single point of failure and once the registry corrupts it can render your machine completely unbootable. I much prefer Mac OS-X's property list files. WHen something corrupts (if ever) on those, it doesn't affect any other program or the operating system.

However, I think I wouldn't want to see OS-X be ported as a mainstream OS like XP though. Apple has done a good job limiting the hardware OS-X has to support so there are fewer headaches. I like that model. I also like the exclusivity of knowing once you by a mac, there aren't any cheap knock offs out there that can compete using the OS. shrug

At least it's effective. Just close whatever app crashed.

With Apple, if something freezes - oh well, yer screwed! Manual restart, bitch!

Those machines are POSs IMO.

Not true.

Plenty of apps freeze XP. It runs applications in a theoretical designated space. I forget what the term is, but the problem is programs which make thread calls to the subsystem (some applications can do this--Microsoft's abstraction layer doesn't prevent it) can crash the OS altogether.

I supported application packaging and distribution via Novell Zenworsk to NT, 2000, then XP (been in IT for about 14 years now lol since green screen mainfraims were in vogue in the military) and although they've greatly improved stability, I've been on many a call were we've tried to determine what business application components were crashing the system.

To be honest; all of you are wrong and behaving like spoilt kids.

Fruit - you shouldn't take bait, you should back down. I despise macs too.

The rest of the mac fans - People can have a fucking opinion alright? You don't need to defend apple; they're a corporation, they don't need your support, and people don't have to believe the same thing that you do.

Wow, I guess you weren't paying attention, either. No one was commenting on anyone's 'opinion' and last time I checked there's nothing wrong with calling someone out about a mistruth.

...but, hey, if it's easier for you to make this a Mac vs PC thing... go ahead, limit yourself.

I never said her opinion was wrong. It's that she stated that XP never locks up. I simply offered facts to the contrary. If Fruit or anyone else for that matter actually read my posts, they'd see there's nothing combative or offensive about them.

Totally agreed with you on the Registry. That was a lousy idea from day one and the fact that MS hasn't done something about it in over a decade is really, really piss poor. I'm sure they got the idea from IBM's OS/2, which had something similar. They key difference being that I never saw an OS/2 system eat itself.

prefer Mac OS-X's property list files. WHen something corrupts (if ever) on those, it doesn't affect any other program or the operating system.

...and you can simply delete the offending plist and either OS X or the app who owns it will regenerate a new, clean one when needed. No need to re-install, etc.

Well that answers my question.

Read back:

I never said XP doesn't lock up. I said the OS has never crashed on me.
I wasn't the one aruging with opposoing views. What part of "IMO" and "in my experience," and "it just doesn't appeal to me" = "all Macs are crap and I'm stating this as a fact" in your brain?

Now, I don't *HATE* XP. I think it's pretty nifty. And I heard that Vista is going to implement search features (like Spotlight, etc.) and a couple of neat "innovations" into Vista. But these are things that are already in OS-X.

Nor do I hate the registry. I just think it poses too many problems to be beneficial. It's time to move away from it as you stated.

But ultimately, my decision to go with mac is based on the fact that I love the look and feel of the systems. It's like buying a Audi TT. You don't do it becuase it's fast, or has a flip-top--plenty of cars fit that bill. You buy it becuase--hey, it's a fucking TT man!! lol
