Woman sues bar because of injury during "Shakira" contest

From the New York Daily News:

Shakira wanna-be sues after bar fall

By Jose Martinez
Daily News Staff Writer

Read these hips: Shaking it like Shakira on top of a bar just might not be such a great idea.

A New Jersey woman is suing Calico Jack's Cantina after allegedly taking a tumble and shredding ligaments in her left knee last summer during a "Shake It Like Shakira" contest at the Manhattan watering hole.

In a lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Megan Zacher, 22, blames Calico Jack's owners for staging the sexy shake-a-thon on a "wet, unprotected and unsafe" bar area.

"Between people and bartenders spilling drinks on the bar, it's just not a safe surface," said Lawrence Simon, an attorney for Zacher.

"The event itself was inherently unsafe," Simon said.

The tribute to the sultry Colombian singer - who teamed up with Wyclef Jean on the hit "Hips Don't Lie" - was held July 8 at the bar, a frat-boy favorite at Second Ave. and 42nd St.

Zacher entered the contest after stopping in for birthday drinks with friends.

A nasty spill on the slick surface tore ligaments in Zacher's knee, Simon said, causing her to undergo reconstructive surgery.

"She's still recovering from it," he said.

Calico Jack's staged weekly Saturday night "Shake it Like Shakira" promotions, with $3 margaritas, $2 drinks and $1 tacos.

A $250 grand prize was promised for "one lucky lady."

Photos of past contests are posted on the Calico Jack's Web site, showing thong-wearing beauties bumping and grinding on the bar in front of mesmerized male patrons.

The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, says Calico Jack's should have warned would-be Shakiras of the competition's hazards.

Simon added that his client hadn't consumed much alcohol when she fell.

"She was on her second drink," he said.

A spokesman for Calico Jack's declined to comment.

If I would've been there, drunk off my ass (and with those drink prices, thats not much of a stretch!! party), the paramedics would've carried me out in a straight jacket I would've been laughing so hard.....and she definitely would've gotten my vote.....clapping

Seriously though, Americans sue other people because of the most stupid crap. They'd be lauged out of town everywhere else. Putting your cat in the microwave and then suing the manufacturer because he didn't inform that cats die when dried in microwaves? disbelief

Yep. I get nervous as soon as someone steps on my property. We have a neighbor who has sued to people already for slipping and falling. People are always looking to make an easy dollar. Pathetic.

True. nod

That's horrible to think of though. sad

This case is stupid, but anywhere NEAR as ridiculous as the fan who recently sued the Rolling Stones for 51 million dollars for cancelling a gig. disbelief

its the combination of the Stones' cumulative ages and the ages of most of the audience....51 mil seems appropriate.....giggle

Well if they decide to settle the suit, part of the settlement should be that the bar owners MUST install a stripper pole on the bar for future contests...so that the "less than completely coordinated" contestants will have something to hang on to while they get their Shakira on..... lol
