you lie... you're not flying out here to see it.

but that would be awesome.

yeah, i have been up to my tits in rewrites, rehearsals, lighting designs, and other directing shit since we got back from texas. i will be sooooo glad when it is 7:01, and the stage manager and i can sit back with our drinks, and just watch and be done with all the stress.

i have no nails left, i have literally chewed them all down to the quick while rehearsing. i tend to do that when i am directing. not out of fear, just out of not realizing i am doing it.

it went well enough.

there is an old theatre superstition that if you have a great final dress rehearsal, opening will go badly and vice versa. it proved to be true last night.

it went well, but nowhere near as well as it had gone the night before. there were some music problems, and we saw some material flop a bit. sections are going to have to be rewritten.

so good, but not great.

we are rewriting 3 sections this week before next show on monday.

There's an old saying in the theatre: "Opening night actually means 'The night before a show is ready to open'". It's tough 2 judge your own material and not do it harshly. I, personally, think it needs 2 b a huge success so it will still b running when next I'm in the city! biggrin

well, we're not giving up. most of the problems can be attributed to opening night jittery shit, and two bad choices we made and learned the lesson and will be correcting for the rest of this run:

each night the birthday "kid" is selected by the cast/crew without them knowing they are selected. i realized last night, after the birthday kid was female (and had always been male in the last run) that an audience has absolutely no issue laughing at a male being picked, but it takes them a while to laugh at a female, because they worry about if she is in on the joke, is she okay, is she going to be hurt by the jokes, etc. it sounds sexist, but i really sw how true it is last night. so no more female birthday kids.

the anti-chris puppet has had his section scrapped and rewritten in rehearsals. the first version was really really funny where the anti-chris was this anthony hopkins in "silence of the lambs" crazy and was wanting to eat christopher's (the star, not me) soul and did the whole "kids show lesson thing" about saying "please" before requesting to eat his soul. it was realy funny, but we second guessed ourselves, thinking it didn't really fit the plot of the show, because the other puppets reflect his internal homophobia, pain, etc. this one didn't, and so we scrapped and rewrote. the new bit fits... but isn't that funny. the audience barely cared about the anti-chris. so we are going to try the old bit.

for future runs the opening and ending are getting overhauls, as the magic tricks he is doing there are too little kid magic trick and we need something more impressive to adults there. some of the kid jokes are going the way of the dodo and will be replaced by adult jokes, which went over well, while only a handful of the kid jokes did. it was really odd, because in the last run, they ate the kid jokes up, and somehow that changed in changing venues. weird.

overall, it was good though. sammy the safety donut was a big big laugh getter, the floating invisible ball trick which has a very sweet "happy memory" thing with it (which i have been calling the "dream ballet") got audible gasps, sentimental smiles and huge compliments, including from christopher's former mentor. ryan got huge laughs pulling his piano playing cancer boy no emotion no speaking bit. chris got some huge laughs on some of the adult jokes, and the audience participation parts went really well. they were somewhere between mortified, laughing heartilly, and sad when he killed jojo the dodo, and the ending mental breakdown, breakdown song, redemption and resurection of jojo went very well, which had previously been a big arguing point between the creative team.

overall, i would say it was a B- or B night. were gonna fix a few things, see how the next two weeks go and go from there.

although we did have a happy mistake last ngiht that paid off big time. the birthday girl was asked what her card was, and she said "the seven of clovers"

chris looked at her for a second, then back at the card and said "interesting, most people would call that the seven of clubs, but okay"

big laugh.

and for the rest of that bit he kept calling it the seven of clovers, which got big laughs each time.
