VOLVER I had the pleasure of seeing Pedro Almodovar's latest film, "Volver." It was all the rage at Cannes this year and now I understand why. I've been a fan of Almodovar since 'Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," and "Volver" sees the "return" of that film's star, Carmen Maura. Although, Maura is always good - I was especially impressed with Penelope Cruz - who in American films just seems like another beautiful woman with Spanish accent - but in "Volver" she shows depth and a natural presence. She carries this film and does it well. I read a review that said that Almodovar approaches his characters with humor and honesty, but most of all with compassion. I would have to agree. No matter what they've done or haven't done, said or haven't said, I find myself feeling for the character(s) no matter what. It's as if you personally understand the characters' plight no matter how foreign it is, and simultaneously admire their resolve to fix it.

Antonio Banderas should have stayed in Spain with Pedro.... and his first wife! Grab a matinee for 1/2 price... it might be at a Laemele too - but I saw in Hollywood uca it was convenient Really, it might be his best film ever... and I thought "All About My Mother" was A+ !!!!
