Unhealthily overweight individuals who work hard to become fit and healthy are to be admired for it is a wonderful accomplishment and takes effort and dedication.

What I find sad is how many in today's society extoll the idea of "beauty" as the end-all be-all of human accomplishment, and who put physical perfection first in exclusion to almost all else. Caring about one's appearance is one thing; obsessing over it, holding it above all else in terms of importance, relying solely on it, and believing it somehow makes one elite or more deserving is another.

Physical beauty can bring out so very much ugliness.

It is so true! I have never run faster than from guys I dated who would be considered "Gods" in every sense of the physical word.

Yes, there are physically magnificent people out there whose pretty outer shells conceal true putridity, or at least an utter void. I myself discovered this truth the hard way.

Sorry, that's just the way I express myself. I come from a working-class background. shrug
I just don't see how idolizing those who are considered to be physically perfect, when the majority of us are not, could be healthy. There's no way of ever reaching that ideal unless you resort to extremes and plastic surgery, which I think is not a good way to deal with things.

That's were we see things DRASTICALLY differently.

I never said idolizing them.
I never said placing any MORE value on these folks than what is due to them.

There is a strong different between admiring and using someone as your inspiration, and idolizing them to the point of starving yourself through anarexia, bulemia, etc.

The problem with America is that we are so out of balance with our spirtiual and emotional wellbeing that we slip into a downward spiral of placing too much value in superficial things.

I'm saying, ONCE AGAIN, that I know I will never look like Tyson Beckford. But I can atleast admire the way he looks. I can at least use his beauity and image as inspiration.

I think it's alot less healthy to just assume one can develope an "I am happy with myself" attitude, if they are overweight and suffer from health problems. No--that person was me circa 1999. That person needs to get out of that rut. Otherwise, they'll be miserable, no matter what they say on the outside, and tell themselves on the inside.

I see what you're saying...and I do agree with some of it. For example, I admire Monica Bellucci for her looks, but I do not think she's a better person or more valuable or deserving of love than me or another average-looking person. However, there are many people in our society who do think that and inact that on others.

There is also something to be said for having an "I am happy with myself" attitude and as a result wanting to take better care of oneself. I think those who have given up need to be reminded that they're worthy of being loved and cared for.

Also, remember that being a little overweight does not automatically equal unhealthy wink

YOU'RE spats!!!!!

Kidding! I agree. I just can't say it as nice as u.

Dear me, madam! Spats and I are most certainly two separate entities and, if I might say so, I believe he and I could be the virtual equivalent of Goofus and Gallant. smile

Thank you for your kind remark on my previous comment.

Do you have an accurate perception of what you look like? Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but how much of the image you see in the mirror is influenced about how you feel about yourself? How much is it influenced by what others say? Do you think you see yourself as you truly are?

Even though I work out a lot and try to live a healthy lifestyle, I never thought of myself as great-looking, but friends(and strangers) say otherwise. My best friend of over 25 years tells me I always underestimate myself. It's nice getting compliments at the gym, so I guess I'm doing something right.

Thanks, Richard and Dansa, but you know me and like me, so it doesn't count. nana wink hug

As for fat lazy twinkie-eating couch potatoes. . .

I've decided to embrace the stereotype! biggrin I mean, I'm still going to be an obese, active, vegan, healthy type (with the recent exception of a rather large quantity of banana laffy taffy . . . thanks again, WW lol ). But since everybody is going to assume that I'm actually a lazy slob, I think I'm going to go with it. I'm going to get Hostess-brand gym clothes, and when I finally buy my own kayak ( mushy ) I'm going to have a big long couch painted on the side. Just so people don't see me out there and accidentally think my fat ass is doing something athletic. Wouldn't want to ruin my image.

Or, wait. . . would I be ruining THEIR image? Their ignorant, self-serving, hateful image . . . ?

Whatever. I'm not gonna think too hard about it. I'm just gonna GO for it. nod

Thanks, guys. biggrin
