MySpace to block illegal use of copyright music

Updated Tue. Oct. 31 2006 10:20 AM ET

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- MySpace.com will use "audio fingerprinting" technology to block users from uploading copyright music to the social networking site, the company said Monday.

MySpace, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., said it will review all music files uploaded by community members to their online profiles. The files will be run through a music database from Gracenote Inc.

"MySpace is staunchly committed to protecting artists' rights, whether those artists are on major labels or are independent acts," said Chris DeWolfe, MySpace chief executive and co-founder.

The company said users who repeatedly attempt to upload copyright music files will be permanently barred from the site.

Online sites such as MySpace and YouTube have come under fire from major record labels who have sued in some cases to prevent copyright music from being included as the soundtrack to a user-generated content.

Several record labels recently announced licensing deals with YouTube, which has chosen to share ad revenue with record labels rather than filter music itself.

The challenge of policing its users' music choices is just one issue facing MySpace, which has skyrocketed in popularity over the past year.

The social networking site must address concerns that it will morph from a user-controlled site to a corporate tool that News Corp. uses to push the company's movies and TV shows. MySpace also has been grappling with frequent spam attacks and has had to take steps to limit invitations from bogus "friends" sent to thousands of users at a time.

1) I just read an article in which several teens said "myspace" is soooo yesterday

2) illegal use of music hurts the artists who created it.

Yeah.

I think myspace is great if the artist and record labels themselves allow their music to be profiled there. It's free advertising.

But if they didn't chose to post their music (which you can prevent from being dowloaded, and only heard as a music stream), then people should respect that.

But I think teens shouldn't be on it anyways. They stink up the place.

interesting time that thing has come, clearly people were lulled into a false sense of serenity by believing that the website somehow was all about only connections and had very little longrange impact deigned to be commercial. i joined with the intent of connecting with likeminded and interested parties who might also like to purchase art when i so think i want to sell... either way, the like mindedness has commercial realities attacteched zzz hey! new word... i like it!!! smile

cheers!

What did you expect when Fox bought them out?

Oh and wait for a YouTube crackdown HARDCORE! YouTube as we know it will be going away. Though it was Google that bought them out, so all is not completely lost.

Them and all the hoochie mommas! I mean what is UP with all of these girls posting themselves like Hookers! The only thing I can think of, is that it's some sort of company that's doing this. I say it becasue it seems that their profiles aren't entirely real. I mean what girl would dress like a whore and post herself on there?

My friend who uses his space to promote music and DJ stuff. I swear like 1/2 are the hoochies! He just accepts any and all. Though it's not a "real" fan base, in searches and promotions, it DOES increase your file plays and rankings.

How do they know if someone's paid for the rights?? Or if the musicians have given them verbal permission to use the music? Or in one case I know, the musicians themselves have put their videos on someone elses page, what then?
Who's doing the policing? Can someone go after them for barring someone that has verbal permission?
