The secret to a long-term relationship?

I was in a store the other day and an elderly man and woman approached the front desk. The man explained, in accented English, that it was he and his wife's 50th Anniversary and they were looking for a special outfit for her for the occasion.

The clerk congratulated them and the man softly said thank you with a sweet smile. At this point, the woman started to say something about what kind of outfit she was looking for, when the man turned to her and said, "WILL YOU BE QUIET AND JUST LET ME DO THE TALKING?!" lol

True story.

See? If New Jersey allows gay marriage, than we're going to start seeing this happen to men too. sigh

It's amazing isn't it? That's where I want to be in 50 years time. smile

Not telling my wife to be quiet like that though, but rather with my slippers on, doing the crossword and politely asking for a nice cup of tea. thumbs up!

I think we're looking at it with this "abusive" mindset. They probably do that all day long. She'll tell him to just get in the car and hush up. He'll say where is my coffee....She rolls her eyes as she puts in on the table. lol And yet, they hold hands when they walk....

If they do that all day long that makes it even worse. That is a sad relationship either way. If any of my girlfriends told me to shut up and get in the car it would be over. If i just got into one annoying argument with a girlfriend i would be making plans on getting out of the relationship.

Girl you hit the nail right on the head...my grandparents act this exact same way and they have been married for 58 years!!! nod

it's not so much abusive with the way they talk, its just that they are used to it.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

If you are talking to each other that way it's not good. Not healthy. Those people are from another generation where you accept that as normal and put up with it. That's why you rarely see people from that generation get divorced. Younger people if they are smart realize life is too short for that.

I know what a good relationship looks like and what a bad one looks like. A couple that's always yapping at each other is not good. But the people don't know anything else because they have been together so long.People from that generation are different as i said. How many people from that generation do you see ever get divorced? Different time.

A buddy of mine is like that with his wife NOW. I have warned him to get out. I told him he will regret it if he doesn't. They are always chirping at each other like you have described.

I feel sorry for him. I don't want him to end up like some old couple doing the same yapping years from now.

My mum used to work at a geriatric nursing home, and she said this one couple, Mr & Mrs Clarke had been married 70 years or something. Mrs Clarke HATED Mr Clarke and only styed with him because divorce was not the done thing. But since his stroke at the age of 90 he had been lovely. When he died she said good riddance.
