the juice is the data, silly.

that's why you're more careful in life - less quicksave opportunities.

birth is just what it appears to be. It extends the game when parts (and possibly the characters themselves) get too old. It keeps the game fresh, but maintains lineage and, thus, familiarity, continuity.

I wonder if the computers ever crash and we all freeze. of course we wouldn't be aware when it happens. what would happen if the computer rebooted?

Surely not. Everything would spontaneously reset back to the beginning, or back to the last save - including the world. We might all suddenly become children again; of course with no recollection of the past that would now be our futures.

well, yes, assuming it is a single game

I suppose I was thinging of us as just one of many programs, though. Natural catastrophe would be the "cause" of any lost data

You guys should read 'Altered Carbon' by Richard Morgan... Consciousness is periodically backed up in case of biological death... In case someone dies... the consciousness from the last backup is put in a new body... The stuff that happened after the last backup is lost...

Cool alter accounts spooky... as for the matrix theory, I'm totally into it. Each time humans create machines to do the work for them (by Newtons 3 law of equal and opposite reactions) the computer also becomes part human in the sense that it does work in a way that mimics the human. So each time we create an alter identity, we are basically trying to mimic another person/character/machine.

I wonder how the idea of God evolved from allocating responsibilities to the inexplicable..

From lack of knowledge, evidently - without any logic or rationale, humans created with their imagination a divine entity to suit their needs. There is a clearly illustrated link between the arrival of sun worship and the evolution of the human imagination.

So machines are, to some degree, "created in our image?"

nod and if you think about it - of course they would be. Their logic patterns mimic ours.
