Oh holy crap, it's NaNoWriMo time again! Welp, it's November in a few days, which means National Novel Writing Month is about to kick off! For those of you who are uninitiated, NaNoWriMo is a yearly challenge in which people try to write a 50,000 word work of fiction in the space of one month. It doesn't have to be brilliant, it doesn't have to be polished, it doesn't have to be edited to perfection, it doesn't even have to be good. It just has to be 50,000 words you wrote in a month. That's the challenge. I've tried to do this over the past four years...the closest I've gotten so far is 35,000 words (and ooooh it sucked! ). I think I'm gonna give it another go this year, as I already have two advantages over previous years: a) I now have a laptop, and I can write ANYWHERE. b) I am more broke this year than I've been in previous years, so I don't have anything better to do. SO. Is anyone else NaNoWriMo-ing? If yer in Chicago, I'm all for setting up weekend/weeknight writing sessions at local cafes/Borders/wherevs. For more info, go here: www.nanowrimo.com

I remember you talking about this last year.
Good Luck and I hope you hit the target! Just out of interest: does one winner get chosen? Or is it a fun event, to encourage people to start writing??

Or is it a fun event, to encourage people to start writing?? thank ya! and no, there's no winner or judging of stories. it's totally for motivation. it's kind of a marathon for writers. everyone who gets to 50,000 words gets special mention.

You are so gonna do it this year! Agreed!! i'll see how it goes - i won't make any promises if i feel like i'd write more if i kept it to myself. i posted excerpts to the nanowrimo site last year...maybe i'll do the same on my MySpace page. nothing wrong with sharing little bits and pieces that actually manage to turn out well.

it's on trust. you don't win anything material, so if you cheat it's a pretty hollow victory.

What were your previous novels about? one was a dystopian future story about a kid who sells his skin as advertising space, and the other was a satire/fantasy about a talentless celebrity who not only finds herself physically disappearing, but gradually disappearing in the collective consciousness of society as well. the one i'm doing this year is about a guy who grows up with a vampire mom.
