Dune is one bad movie! What was Lynch on? WTF is this movie? Its bloody awful. I couldn't even sit through it. Lynch fucked up bigtime on this one. Soundtrack is OK, but judging by the movie, is the book any better? Anyone seen this movie? [Edited 10/25/06 18:16pm]

I've seen it twice even. I like that spotty man that floats around (it has been about 15 years since I saw it)
"Dune is directed by David Lynch and released on December 14th 1984. The origional version had a running time of 141 minutes, hours of endless plotting that left many people confused. The movie featured an international all-star cast, starring Francesca Annis (Lady Jessica), Linda Hunt (Shadout Mapes), Max von Sydow (Dr Kynes) and Kyle Machlachlan (Paul). The movie had 55 speaking roles and 20,000 extras. The crew was a migthy force of 900 men and women. The movie was shot in Churubusco Studios in Mexico City. The bugdet run on $US 52,000,000 that was mainly spent on design and effects. The movie is visionary ground breaking and is a feast for the eye. With more than 70 sets that represent four unique worlds, all elegantly designed to fit into that specific culture. The beautiful costumes were designed by Bob Ringwood, his sence of elegance set the mood the entire film. The desert scenes were shot in California and over two months were spent removing all animals and plats from the desert to make it look like Arrakis. But the movie was not a picnic... One of the great challenges for the special effects crew was the creation of the sandworms. The task was given to Carlo Rambaldi, that had worked on E.T. The sandworms was not cheap, $2 million was spent on them. Another problem for the film makers was the blue fremen eyes that could have taken an ugly turn if it wasent for Raffaella DeLaurentiis that insisted on testing the blue dyes herself before the cast was to use it. It left her blind for two days!" "Frank Herbert wrote science fiction history when his book Dune was published in 1964. He won the very first Hugo and Nebula award for his work and the book sold in millions of copys. Critics found that the only this was compareable to it was The Lord of the Rings. And so, in the early 1980´s David Lynch decided to make a motion picture of it. The movie Dune was released on 14th December 1984 and was one of the most anticipated movies that year. But it became one of the most laughed at movies of all ages. The critics tore it to pieces. I think it is funny since all critics do is to complain about the regular blockbusters, and then one movie comes along that is compleatly different - and they just cut it to pieces. Dune did not become the blockbuster it was ment to be. People says that the complex story and lack of humor is one reasons. Even David Lynch is told to be ashamed over his work. But I dont think he should. It is a wonderful movie, beautiful in all aspects. Worthy of it's name. And it was aproved by Frank Herbert before his death in 1986. Something that the scifi channels miniseries were, and look how horrible they turned out. " from Sands of Time, Dune 1984 Fanlisting

I did love the look of the film, but its just so boring. Such a pity no thought was given to the actual mechanics of moving a story along without wondering WTF is going on. Iam very curious about the book though.... Anyone read it? The lead bloke looked like one of the actors from "showgirls"? Any opinions of the film? I do own the soundtrack, and thats quite good in places.

Dune is more of a cult thing.
If you think the movie is complex, then don't bother reading the books. However, if you do enjoy twisted sci-fi and elaborate fantasy, then I strongly recommend them. I got "Dune" as a gift, then went out and bought "Dune Messiah", and I just recently finished the third novel; "Children of Dune". As soon as I finish my latest Star Wars novel then I'll look for the 4th Dune book. The Sci-Fi chanel aired a made-for-TV version of DUNE a few years ago. If you can find it, then check it out. Much less intricate. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Someone needed to edit that film and just streamline the story more. But yeah, the story did sound cool, but the execution of the film itself, and the basic narratives u should follow 4 people to enjoy movies, was not there.
