Oh my chocolate Jesus, I can NOT watch RENT

Let me start off by saying I HATE musicals. The last musical I've seen was "The Wiz", back when I was 13. When my sister asked me if I wanted to watch it, I thought it was a movie about peeing. See, even at the tender age of 13 I was morbidly curious about watersports. But aren't they like at the bottom of theatre hierarchy, right below miming or something? Anyway...So I'm over at a friend's house with my ex last night, and he's a total broadway bitch. My friend, Patrick, asks us what we want to watch. I wanted to see Kill Bill (again..), and my ex, Ben, screams out "OOOH!! YOU HAVE RENT!?!?" So Pat's like "Hell yeah!!" and they pop that in. Needless to say, I was drinking. I've heard all the damn fuss about this alleged movie, so I decided to give it a shot. Now, I hate watching movies with other people. They always tend to speak more than the damn actors. I wouldn't even watch a movie with a deaf and blind person because if I laughed or something, even they would bother me, asking me to rewind because they didn't see or hear a part. Pat puts the dvd in and IMMEDIATELY they start skipping to this scene and that scene. Then finally they let the movie play. I didn't make it. I was passed ass out on the couch. Only to be awakened by this wolf like howling which I suppose was to be mistaken for singing. "Let's go oooooOOOOOUUUUU!!!111 tonight!!" I jumped up thinking that it was the dog screaming in agony from another fit of foamy diarrhea, only to look at the screen and see some bitch climbing up a fire escape. I thought they were watching Spiderman or some shit. They assured me they weren't, so I went back to sleep. Then I wake up again only to see some prostisexual or transvestitute a she, he, it, something on the screen banging on shit and singing about something. Probably about his/hers/its grand ol' opee-ration or some shit. I don't know. So all in all, I slept through about 100% percent of this movie. How is it possible I slept throught 100% and still managed to see some of it? Simple. Because the movie is 100% bull, and 5% shit. Guess which 5% I've seen. And why is the movie called RENT? Wasn't everybody on there homeless? And why do people have this "movie"? I wouldn't want it if it was called "FREE". They should've named it "SLEEP" since that's what I did throught, hell, all of it. Other suggested names for this "movie":
Don't RENT this
RENT another movie
Should you be spending your RENT money on this?
and the list goes on.
Wow. A bunch of gays and crackheads singing about AIDS. How revo-f*cking-lutionary. I don't know. Maybe I need the attention span of a cracker to appreciate(HA!) RENT. Or stupid. RENT seriously needs more explosions, monsters, and exploding monsters.
and some ninjas and pirates.
Okay. End rant. off 2 bed.

One of my friends is obsessed with this turd, so I saw it at the cinema and nearly walked out. The songs are AWFUL. Everything about them and the awful storyline. I can't believe this ever ran on Broadway for so long.

I normally love musicals. My mate always makes a joke when I go round to stay that we should watch her DVD of Rent before we go to sleep. I'm horrified at the thought of sitting through it again.

i've been curious about 'rent' ever since i lived in NYC and first saw it being advertised as a workshop production on 4th street in the east village...yet i always stop just short of seeing it, because i'm afraid it'll suck and i'll get angry at how musical theatre people depict my beloved e.vill. lol

i'll probably break down and get the DVD from netflix someday, but clearly i'm in no hurry.

The film really annoys me because it's set in 1989 but there's a line in one of the songs about Thelma & Louise no no no!

all i know is, if you wanna watch a cool musical about hip people in downtown NYC, rent "hedwig & the angry inch" instead. it's not strictly set in NYC, but the sensibilities are very "east village glory days"...plus the music kicks ass.

nod Hedwig is the shit.

And, actually, the music in Rent is very catchy...and, socially, the depiction of those who are HIV+ and have AIDS is really important -- especially to those who think they are untouchable (it was hard to be diplomatic in that statement lol ).

Broadway always features horrible music. Nothing worse than show tunes.

I also really liked the music. I went to see the play not expecting to like it at all, but came away humming a lot of the songs. The movie was okay, but I love that soundtrack.

And add another recommendation for Hedwig. If you can't get into that movie then you are beyond hope.

I thought RENT on Broadway was one of the best musicals I've seen. shrug I haven't seen the film, but I've heard mostly good things.

Never saw Hedwig onstage. The movie was decent, though. Liked RENT better. boxed

Me too! Those songs just grow on you.
And Hedwig is just the total package...the story is epic and the characters are so well developed that it's easy to know them...also, the soundtrack is phenominal and stands on its own. I've been looking for more songs by Stephen Trask's old band Cheater for years and haven't been successful. I've found one single, but it wasn't for sale. They were so good!

you gotta open your mind a little. i loathe the great majority of broadway show tunes out there, but if i were this stand-offish, i'd never have given stuff like rocky horror or hedwig a chance, and i LOVE both soundtracks to death. of course, neither are exactly the broadway "style" - both shows are essentially rock shows with dialogue in between the songs - but i'm sure glad i didn't take the "all broadway sucks" route when these shows were playing. nod

I like the old Broadway better than the newer hipper Broadway. I liked Hedwig & Rocky Horror, yes, but generally I'm not a fan of this rock-ish new Broadway. I'd rather hear actual rock music or showtunes, not the worst of both worlds.

:hifive: I feel you on that shit. Showtunes urk the living shit outta me. but RENT is on some whole 'nother annoying ass shit that I don't have the patience to tolerate on ANY level. And everybody was telling me "OH!! You'd LOVE Angel!!" Apparently, those motherfuckers don't know me that well. What exactly should I love about a spanish homo in a wig? I'd sure like to know.

Let me start by saying that I LOVE musicals. But, I was VERY disappointed in the play "Rent". I remember getting all excited when I heard that it was coming to my town, and I got a ticket right away.

There was one part in the play that was really stupid, I thought. They had one of the actresses do like a solo scene that had NOTHING at all to do with the storyline. I think she must have bitched about needing a solo part, so they gave it to her. rolleyes Anyway, she was up there onstage talking about cows, and then she said to the audience, "Let me hear you moo! C'mon, say, "Mooo!"" omfg disbelief I could not hardly believe it, it was soooo stupid! It felt like I was back in preschool again, and we were learning about farm animals, and the teacher was asking us to moo. rolleyes If someone had told me about that part of the play, I probably would not have believed them, but it did happen.

I would not recommend "Rent" to anybody, unfortunately. It gets a lot of hype about being a play that you "must see, it's fantastic", but unfortunately, it was not a good experience for me. disbelief
