A final huddle to wrap up practice Friday
Friday (10/27/2006) KIRKLAND – For a Friday, it sure was an interesting afternoon for the Seattle Seahawks as they prepare for Sunday’s game at Kansas City against the Chiefs (3-3), with hopes of improving their record to 5-2. Quarterback Seneca Wallace completed his first full week as the starting quarterback as a result of Matt Hasselbeck’s sprained right knee, which makes the situation interesting enough. But now there’s a decent possibility that Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard (already the backup for Trent Green, who was sidelined in the preseason with a concussion) may not play due to a groin injury. If that is the case, the Chiefs will start rookie Brodie Croyle. In other words, it would be a second-string Wallace against third-string Croyle. But that’s little consolation for Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren. He not only is without Hasselbeck, but MVP running back Shaun Alexander, starting left guard Floyd Womack, and slot receiver Bobby Engram. Also, starting right tackle Sean Locklear was suspended by the league for this game in response to his alleged assault last January (of which he was exonerated). The good news is, starting defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs has responded from treatment on his sore knee and practiced with the first team on Friday. Tom Ashworth will start for Locklear – and fortunately, right tackle happens to be Ashworth’s natural position. Despite all of the injuries, Chris Spencer and rookie Rob Sims splitting time at left guard, and Jordan Babineaux starting in place of benched strong safety Michael Boulware, Holmgren isn’t about to do any hand-wringing. “We’ve been through it the year before - and years past,” Holmgren said. “But it kind of gets magnified when it happens to your quarterback, or in our case, the MVP. You have two players that people know outside of Seattle that can’t play. The guys have to step up and play. You have to play the games with who’s healthy, and we’re no different then other teams. At times it seems like we have a whole bunch right now. Hopefully when we get everybody back, maybe at the end of the season, we’ll be real healthy and we won’t have anybody (injured).” Most importantly, Holmgren was impressed with the way Wallace – the fourth-year quarterback from Iowa State – is preparing himself for his first start. “Now he gets a chance to play,” Holmgren said. “My job will be keeping his feet on the ground. Keeping him calmed down. I thought he handled everything beautifully. He’s been here and he understands our system. I think he has a good grasp of everything. When the game starts, and it gets a little hectic and it’s a noisy place, then he has to work on staying calm. He had a good week of practice.” Locklear, meanwhile, had been downgraded to questionable from probable on Thursday due to an ankle sprain. Holmgren said he had improved and would have played were it not for the suspension – which they suspected was coming but didn’t know when. “(Locklear) would’ve been okay that way,” Holmgren said. “You always have a little bit of an inkling (of suspensions). He went through an issue last year, but every once in a while I’m surprised by what takes place, and this one was one of those.” This is a particularly opportune time for Ashworth at right tackle, as opposed to his struggles attempting to adapt to both guard positions since he signed as a free agent from New England. “It’s part of football,” Ashworth said. “I’m just going to take the opportunity and try to make the best of it. I’ve definitely played a lot more of right tackle, so I’m more comfortable with it.” Regarding Babineaux, he made two interceptions in practice Friday: one a diving tip catch in a move hoping to slow down the big plays that have struck the Seahawks the past three weeks. “He has a chance to play now,” Holmgren said. “The guys that do get a chance that have been waiting, they recognize the opportunity. The whole thing there is, in our secondary, with all our secondary, all our guys, they have to read their keys. They have to be disciplined. You’re not at the playground where you’re just playing. You have to do it in a disciplined matter, and that’s what we’re looking for.” Unless something unexpected happens, both Alexander and Womack will be back next week, but the viral thyroid condition of the 33-year-old Engram is not quite that cut and dried. He ran well on Thursday, but was tired again on Friday. He will have more tests on Monday as they evaluate the best way to handle his circumstances in the big picture. “It’s on a week-to-week basis,” Holmgren said. “He gets tired, and he was one of those guys like the energizer bunny - he could go all day. This is a new feeling for him, and it’s a little uncomfortable for him. He’s going to get re-tested on Monday. His numbers have to continue to go in the direction they’re supposed to.” And regarding the possibility of facing Croyle instead of Huard, well, Holmgren made a point of emphasizing a loss to Indianapolis when he was coaching the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers when the Colts had an unknown backup quarterback running the show. “I suspect we will get Damon Huard,” Holmgren said. “That’s who we are preparing for, and I think he’s probably going to play.” “You have to still bring it,” Holmgren said. “You have to come and treat them like anybody else playing that position. We’ll talk about it; hopefully the message gets across. I can tell him first hand knowledge of a good football team that didn’t listen to me, and as a result they got beat. I think all of those kinds of things help in preparation.”

Congrats goes to Kansas City. There are really only two on the team that I might say had a great game. The kicker Josh Brown! And my boy Seneca Wallace! He did really good in his first time starting at QB.

I just emailed Chris Collingsworth at NBC.com and gave him a piece of my mind because of some stupid sh*t he just said. He thinks the Steelers shouldn't bench Big Ben because he's the future of the Pittsburgh Steelers. WTF does that have to do with anything??? The man suffered a life threatening injury less than a year ago, plus major abdominal surgery a few weeks ago, plus a concussion last week. If somebody doesn't bench his ass and allow him to heal he don't have much of a future with any team! The way the Steeler offensive line has been playing the past couple weeks, somebody's gonna kill that fool out there. These guys kill me when they make everything all about one guy at the expense of the entire team. Okay, I'm headed back over to the Steelers board to rant some more. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Atlanta at Cincinnati Baltimore at New Orleans Houston at Tennessee Jacksonville at Philadelphia ...the Dysfunctional Bowl.... Seattle at Kansas City ...only because of the injuries.... San Francisco at Chicago ...hope the offense comes to play for the Bears... Tampa Bay at N.Y. Giants St. Louis at San Diego ...upset special....Chargers defense is depleted Indianapolis at Denver ...Broncos D is about to give up MAD points.... N.Y. Jets at Cleveland Pittsburgh at Oakland ..if they can't beat the Raiders, they should give back the trophy.... Dallas at Carolina Monday, Oct. 30 New England at Minnesota ok...this is the part where I beg someone to FUCKING SHOOT ME!!! Figures that Donovan McNabb would go into his shell....is it just me, or does he look totally shell shocked? Then of course, the Raiders decide that now is a good time to start the season....the Rams decide to take the week off and totally fucked up my upset special..the Saints...u take away the two returned INTs...and the Todd Heap TD on the deflected, shoulda been an INT before the half..and they didn't do too badly...or is that just pie in the sky revisionist thinking...? Now I need Brady to be Brady and give me an even week.... He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.
