Florida Decision Reflects On Illinois Event

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. -- Officials in Byron, Ill., can rest easy following a decision in Florida allowing The Turkey Testicle Festival in that state to keep its name.

The Fort Myers Beach, Fla., Council voted four-to-one to allow the Surf Club to use the word "testicle" for its annual charity fundraiser after a laugh-out-loud discussion.

Some in town objected, saying the name is inappropriate for a family place.


But Mayor Dennis Boback said it's no big deal. He noted the festival has raised about $3,000 for a local food bank in each of the past three years.

Boback asked, "Who cares about the name?" since the money is going for a worthy cause.

Councilman Charles Meador said this year's festival will be the fourth annual, and listed more than 12 other cities that host annual events with the name "testicle."

A change in policy that requires the town council to approve special events brought the issue of the name to the table two weeks ago.

One big seller is the festival's T-shirt. It shows a frightened turkey with his wings over his crossed legs. The festival also features certain deep-fried male turkey parts.

A festival with the same name was held in Byron last weekend.
