Please help! Blood red stems involved... Hi everyone!
One night my dad brought a plant home and it's stems were bright blood red. It has a red cluster of flowers on the top. Its leaves are kind of shaped like a spade on a playing card, the are green with red veins (from the stems) running though it like a regular green leaf would be like. I have been looking on the internet for the name of the plant but i have had no success. (I hope i havn't over looked it..) I would REALLY appreciate help! sapphiregirl Let's have a little fun....

Heuchera Red Spangles. [Edited 9/10/06 13:36pm] Thanks for helping.... but, the stems on the plant i have are red. They stick straight up. Also, the leaves are shaped almost exactly like the spade on a playing card (except green). Just picture the plant almost like that except the stems are the same colour as the flowers. Google for Heuchera - There are quite a few different varieties.
These can have Green leaf with red veins and red stems. In my "Big Book of Gardenners ( ) it states "Leaves can be green with Red Veins" also "Stems can be Blood Red" - The leaves are shaped like a Spade, this plant is about 5 - 6 years old and I really don't remember what the leaves looked like when we first got them. The stems do stick straight up, but these are quite tall and the weight of the flower pulled them down !! [Edited 9/11/06 0:31am] .........Gimme your Doughnut,,,,,,

Thanks - First thoughts - Astilbe - However I have just finished a bottle of wine.....So it could be a Triffid for all I know !!!! (just kidding).
I will look into it for you - One other idea is, you can take it to a Garden Centre or Nursery and ask them what it is - If I suss it out I will post again. P.S ..... I feel a little silly now as the Plant I showed you has "Clubbed" shaped leaves and not "Spade" shaped..... .....I now know why I never win at poker..... Any closer? This? If yes, I don't know what it is but it's spread everywhere through my flower beds. If it is this, I can ask my neighbor, as he knows what it is. . [Edited 9/15/06 18:21pm]

[Edited 9/15/06 18:21pm] That looks a lot like that, but the stalk is reallly reallly red. The plant can't be more than a foot tall, and on this one, it doesn't have as many flowers. What did these look like when they were just growing? Let's have a little fun....

What did these look like when they were just growing? When they were just growing they had deep red stems and just one of the flowers on top. As they grew the stems turned the shade that you see in the picture and sprouted more flowers. I think I have some babies left. I'll take a picture of the smaller ones tomorrow.

Actually, you can see one of them in the background. Far right. Just one red flower. You can see the color of the stem but not the rest of the leaves.

Could be geranium family. Exact genus I wouldn't know off the top of my head but could be a Heuchera.
Heuchera micrantha 'Pewter Moon' could be a contender taken from http://www.daytonnursery....uchera.htm [Edited 9/22/06 2:09am] Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

A guy gave dad this when he was working, so i wouldn't know. He said that the plant is considered to be like a weed. I don't know much about its origin. It is the same plant that mazurak has. I don't think it is a Heuchera. Let's have a little fun....
