this Borat guy.... unfunny. admittedly, my exposure to the Borat routine is fairly limited. does he have a show in the UK? i don't know. but any and everything i've seen seems lame. there's no such thing as "almost funny," you know what i mean? the "controversy" over this guy escapes me simply for the fact that i just think he's kind of dull. if he was actually funny, i could see some people being in an uproar, i suppose.
but i thought Ali G. sucked too, so... does this guy have fans? "I don't need your forgiveness, cos I've been saved by Jesus, so fuck you."

With Ali G, Borat, Bruno, etc, sometimes it's not even about the actual character. The reactions and responses they elicit from their unsuspecting 'victims' I guess, is where the really comedy is. That's what always made the show genius to me. It's amazing what level people will stoop to according to who they're talking to.
That being said, I think that's the reason you find Borat unfunny...without the dynamic of someone to screw around with, the schtick gets old fast. [Edited 10/10/06 16:47pm]

I watched Ali G. sometimes when it came on HBO....it was alright. I did like his character Bruno though. He was cute When he played Borat, he did a skit in Charleston,SC at some Confederate dinner. I laughed at seeing those old Southern hicks at their finest looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

I remember reading that he had so much wine he actually passed out in the bathroom! But miraculously he WOKE UP IN CHARACTER! What a pro.

Ali G. just kills me!
I especially love this episode I saw where there was a Borat thing and he went and was sitting with these two guys and showed pictures of him and a chick he called his sister, then the pictures progressed from innocently sitting together to the two of them engaged in some incestuous doings. "We like to play husband/wife." Oh goodness. And then when they're drinking... "You are my best friend." Agh! I can't wait til the movie! This one's for you.

I LOVED Ali G when he was on the 11 o'clock Show in the 90s with Ricky Gervais. The character was wicked cos he was ripping the piss out of quite literally half the guys I was attending college with at the time - ironically they became his main demographic.
Then he got too big and his own TV show wasn't fnny. They learned after the awful ALi G movie that with Borat they should stick with the "unsuspecting interviewees thinking he's genuine" stance.

Borat is VERY FUNNY.
The gay character is so funny and uncomfortable becuase he exposes the fashion industry for what it is; talentless, shallow and lacking any humour. Sacha is A GENIUS!

well, I think it's great that when Sasha Baron Cohen (who does the Borat & Ali G. character and whi is jewish) get on a stage of some american redneck-shack and starts singing 'Throw The Jew Down The Well', that thse people start chanting along with him.....what Cohen does is really show how stupid people (in this case americans) are..... I can't wait to see the movie!
