Computer storage help

Last year I purchased an external hardrive to back up all my prior data.... The power source blew... Now I can aquire another power source through Maxtor for a price but it is fairly pointless as technology has changed and external hard drives have become both very compact and powered through the USB source. ( They in part did away with plug in power sources as apparently mine was a common complaint....)

The delima: I am seeking the most stable way to back up the important files. ( The family pics and vidios long term..) I do have them backed up to DVD but have seen such media just go blank.

What is the best and most stable way to back up media these days.

I use a large internal hard drive for backup files. That way it's not used much but is still readily accessible. If I need to move any files from another location, I use my 512MB USB drive to do the transfers.

Any type of storage is vulnerable to damage/erasure, so the most important thing is not how you store it, but having at least two copies of anything you care about, preferably in different locations (ie. one at your house, one at grandmas, or a safe-deposit box). thumbs up!
