SUVs aren't built for city/suburban driving. That's why they are called sport utility vehicles. They're made for driving in mountains and off-road terrain. And personally, the majority of SUV owners I see driving them are in their car alone. shrug

Our roads are in desperate need of SUVage. I could NEVER drive a car. lol

I hate SUV's, I could never drive one...too many people have them and never use them for what they're intended. And then there's the whole issue of everyone driving them to feel 'safer'...rolleyes if you're buying a bigger car just so others will die in an accident instead of you, something's wrong.

SUV's like the Lincoln Navigator and the Hummer, are uneccesarily huge, and gas guzzlers. But there are alot of smaller more practical vehicles that are coming out nowdays that get tagged as SUV's but aren't really as bad as the ones listed above.

I don't go "off roading" with my Escape, but I do use it to move office furniture and computers and lamps, etc, from time to time. It would be impossible to do something like that in a Jetta for example.

I also like being able to see the road ahead a little better in the SUV's, as opposed to being so low to the ground in a car. When you get stuck behind a truck or a van, it's hard to see whats coming up ahead.

I used to have a Geo Prism years ago, it was one of my first cars, and my head would literally be touching the ceiling of the car, and my knees were practically over the steering wheel. It kind of made me nervous and claustrophobic because I felt like I was in a little death trap, lol.

I will probabbly go back to a sedan when my lease is up, only because I drive like a maniac, and they handle a little better, lol. But SUVs do come in handy sometimes.

I got a 2005 Escape, and had the same problem with a crappy stereo. I used to have a 1999 Mustang, and the stereo that came with it was incredible. So when I went shopping for an Escape, the few that I test drove had Ford's premium sound system in them. I changed my mind at the last moment and went with a different color, and all the features on the car seemed to be the same - however it had the cheapo sound system and I didn't realize it.

Alpine has some kind of package on Crutchfield, where you can get the speakers, a deck, and an amp for like $1000 total. I wound up replacing all my speakers with Infinity's and put in an Alpine deck. I really need to amp it up too, but I don't want to bother with all the wiring.

Yep, the thing about test driving a car is that one doesn't have as much time to fully evaluate all its features. Some people at Edmunds.com are complaining that they their V6 Sonatas aren't as fuel efficient as was adverrtised. In my case, it is the cheap sound and how my music CDs get as hot as if I had put them over a cooking stove.
I know Alpine manufactures CD head sets and that one of their advantages is that they don't skip as much. But what is Crutchfield?

You don't need one. Plain and simple.

So, what kind of car do you drive?

They sure are handy when you have two large dogs and a baby. I can't fit them all in a car.

I had a Ford Escape but I hated it so I got rid of it. Now I drive a boring Dodge Caravan.

nod A spacious car is an asset.

I know you gave the "lol" sign but I really hope you are kidding.

Who are we to judge what other people need?

You just started a thread talking about boxes and closets and closets full of clothes? Think about about all the oil and natural resources that went into creating those clothes(growing and making the fabrics - running the machinery to make the clothes - transporting the clothes and it goes on and on) to sit in your closet.

Besides people who drive SUV's pay extra taxes in order to drive the car they choose because of gas taxes. If they eliminated SUV's today your gas prices would immediately go WAY up due to the huge loss in tax revenue. SUV owners basically are paying for our roads and pet projects such as light rail.

For the record I drive a Camry.

I was most certainly not joking. Unless you have a need for an offroad vehicle, (or heck, even if you at least do it as a hobby) it's at least irresponsible, at most unethical.
I don't really feel like arguing with you about it though. lol

Uhm, that's an interesting way to look at it.
How is owning an SUV irresponsible and unethical?

No, I think excess (in general) and waste of natural resources in particular is irresponsible and sometimes borders on the unethical. If you have a genuine need for such vehicles, they make perfect sense.

That's just it...many people think that SUVs are a symbol of greed and excess when in fact most SUVs on the road are cheaper than a lot of sedans.

Many of them aren't even actual 4x4s and are smaller than pickups and have better mileage than many sportscars and vans.

True. The V6 Sonatas are not as fuel efficient as advertised. I own a 4-cylinder, but I feel that many customers who are now complaining at Edmunds.com have been mislead. That's unethical.

My car is giving me trouble, so I'm considering getting a mid-size SUV to replace it.

I don't want one of those giant SUV's, just something that can fit my wife and 3 kids with room for luggage or bikes.

I really want the new '07 Honda CRV

...but I don't think that I can afford it... sad

I was also looking at the Dodge Caliber

thumbs up!

Yes, indeed. That Dodge Caliber is looking great. Have you test-driven it yet?

you forget the tax breaks the government gave SUV buyers. i do believe that's been reversed, but for several years, SUV owners were actually a drain on the tax base.

a friend of mine actually bought an SUV just for that reason - she is married and has two cocker spaniels - so size was not really a necessity here.

When did the gas taxes especially aimed at SUV owners come in effect?

Yeah, why not? I still miss my SUV. I am afraid dealers are going to be suspicious if I attempt to sell my Sonata after I've driven it only 3 months.

What's the feature that you like the most in a Denali? For me a great CD stereo comes first, and safety comes second ( not that I don't value my safety, but something is missing in a drive without music).

Well you can get whatever package you want. You get what you pay for. If you want it pimped out , get it pimped out, or ya can just get whatever comes standard. Denali's are pretty hot, the standard stereo is probably not to shabby. But ya can always upgrade.

I would like to add to this topic that my current vehicle is a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT.

I get between 17 and 19 mpg.

One of the reasons why I want to get rid of it.
