I love getting rid of stuff. I've been working on it. I'm actually thinking of starting a blog, where I get rid of something every day for a year. It would get harder as the year goes on, of course. Could be dreadfully boring, could be interesting. That said, I am in possession of something that belongs to you unto the end of days... I use the soaps daily ( It turns the shower black where it falls ) but the beautiful lavender and black silk that it was wrapped in and now adorns my dresser belongs to you. With me nearly a year now, I remember the story like it was yesterday... your Grandma felt special buying such an extravagant gift for herself.. and I have been forever honored and touched that you felt me worthy of such a gift.. It hit me in ways I never spoke.... In time to come I will return it to you... because I love you and its time in my hands nears full circle..... Indeed, you are one of the treasures and honors I take with me always... Had I been your mother more honored I could not have been.. know I love you.

I sometimes concern myself more with the people that are emotional hoarders
the things they will store inside their minds and bodys is just incredible if you were able to take those emotions and turn them into stacks of newspapers lets say ... it could fill several large rooms and they carry that with them... inside

I'm a big believer in: -
Space Clearing/Clutter Clearing by Karen Kingston I used to be a big hoarder. I think that possessions, some of it just bits of paper with a note on or old birthday cards, made me feel more complete and safe. Then I realised that the older you get, the more stuff you acquire that you feel is sentimental. I began to feel that something bad would happen if I got rid of it. This book really helped and now if it's not beautiful, useful or essential it goes to charity or a new home or in the bin [Edited 10/9/06 7:08am]

i know a woman who ended up with over 100 cats in her home, probably as a result of her son being brutally murdered. it was a very sad situation and as a petsitter, i have been in several homes of hoarders - not the animal kind, thank goodness, but people who have piles upon piles of stuff everywhere. they tend to be single women, at least in my experience, but i know that men and women both struggle with this issue. what is amazing is how relatively common it is. one thing i've never thought about until i read this article was what it would be like to grow up with a parent who is a hoarder, and the effect this would have on you. turns out there is a website, www.childrenofhoarders.com - it's both fascinating and heartbreaking. do you know a hoarder? how would you deal with a friend or family member who is a hoarder? and is there a cultural component to this - is it more prevalent in some countries? i think 'hoarding' behavior is some kind of OCD -related tendency. recently, the genetic component for this was identified. i think medication could really help some of those folks. that being said, there is NOTHING WRONG with collecting birds
