One of my many issues I've recently figured out that I have managed through life by always assuming people are lying. I got into an argument with a friend of mine because he said it was paranoia, but my argument was it was a "defense" mechanism I guess. One that was formed at an early age at that.
So here's your chance to play armchair shrink... what do you think, is it possible that it could be an actual disorder? I don't think so, but I don't know jack half the time.

Paranoia is a disorder
And symptoms of paranoia are being suspicious that people have hidden motives behind being nice to you, thinking people are lying to you, not letting others in, its hard to trust others or confide in them, doubting people you do confide in..... Does that sound like you?

1 in 5 people have mental illness.
Yes, they do. About 1 in 5 people are blonde, too. So it's not unusual, it's just a typical stigma that certain kinds of people assume it is not "normal". It's a physical illness... in the same way that if you have diabetes, you lack insulin, if you have a mental illness, you lack the natural happy drugs the brain produces like serotonin, dopamine and adrenaline. ...if this is a recurring theme with you, by all means, don't be ashamed to look into it. It's just a very stupid old attitude many people have about it which is the reason so many go undiagnosed out of fear of ridicule, etc... and particularly with blokes/men/guys it is harder to admit because it is often seen as a "weakness".... but ultimately your happiness and peace of mind should be of most importance. . The more I think about it, the more it fits me to a T. But, like, I've been like this forever, it doesn't even seem weird to me anymore, so is it still a disorder?? Or just part of my character? That's the point I try to make.

I know what you mean. Being depressed and not my whole weird dysphoria of not really knowing what I look like (what I see in the mirror is not accurate) are pretty much a part of who I am. I've been that way so long I don't know how to be any different. And I don't really want to try to be any different. I'm content and used to the way things are. Maybe that's complacency. But in any case I totally get what you mean. |

Not everyone is out to make a buck off people and not everyone is stupid enough to simply do what doctors tell them, at the same time. The fact remains that the modern world has a lot to do with that statistic I posted. Check it out anywhere you like. I just heard it again on a tv show aobout mental illness today. I definitely agree that doctors are too quick to diagnose depression. "Oh, you're stressed at work? Depressed!", "Oh, you're sad your bf broke up with you? Depressed!".
Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, not the blues or stress. I certainly believe that 1 - 5 people go thru the blues, but not clinical depression. What test can be performed to determine if someone is really depressed? Is there a brain scan or something like that? And do doctors actually have their patients tested and then make the diagnosis?

Well, at least you've made it into yourself. I get depressed and still know it's not me under there being that way. At the very least, "me" seems to be indifferent. Not sad or pissed off all the time. That just happens in the winter. And Lexapro comes to play.
In your case, I doubt you have a "disorder." But it can't hurt if sometime you have a little extra pocket change if you go see a therapist or something else. you don't have to get all medicated or nothin', just talk it out. This one's for you.

Very general. 1 in 5 with mental illness is not just limited to 'depression'. Think: schizophrenia, bi-polar... any kind of anxiety... OCD.... the list goes on... ... and no, they are not quick to diagnose at all. Maybe in North America, perhaps, the land of drugs and the quick-fix. . [Edited 10/11/06 6:51am]
