Both parents smoked- mom smoked during pregnancy. I am an only child- I have never smoked.
Both parents have since stopped smoking in their 40's- Thank goodness!

There are probably lots of exceptions to that statement. That said, both of my parents smoked. I don't smoke, and I got my parents to quit 25 years ago. smile

Both my parents smoked and I grew up hating it, but I still tried it because it was the done thing when I was far too young...However both parents instilled depency issues in me and as a result I now use smoking as a crutch, just as they did. Life's a bitch. shrug

.. never smoke, and those whose parents have never smoked, smoke?

question

its too constrictive a statement, and reversed.
children learn from their parents
kids often pick up smoking because their parents smoke, among other reasons
kids who's parents don't smoke, may not smoke, but then again might to "be with the cool crowd"

Both of my parents were smokers. (My father no longer does.) I've never smoked myself, and -- to the best of my knowledge -- none of my siblings has either.

I don't know if there's a connection. shrug The main reason why I've never smoked is that it simply doesn't appeal to me. However, seeing my parents (and other family members) struggle with nicotine addiction makes me think that it wouldn't be a good idea to start now.

Liar, I think you forgot all those sandwiches.

I wish that was true of my girlfriend, whose parents & grandparents all smoked

my mom & grandparents smoked & I (& my brother & sister) used to smoke, too

It's too much of a problem for it to be that easy to avoid the trap of smoking.

What?! I'm a bit confused by this response. Neither of my parents were asthmatic at the time they quit smoking, and I'm not asthmatic either.

Sorry, it was in bad taste. As if the only reason a parent would quit is because you had asthma, todd. nevvvvvermind

I think based on this thread, there's no real prediction regarding who will and won't smoke.
