My Dad smoked for years...but I didn't pick up the habit from him....I didn't start smoking hard until I got into some trouble during my first enlistment in the service.....suffice to say that the national crop of Amsterdam was present in my pee-pee....and the Army thought that was a no-no....so they said no more...
...hence, a smoker was born....but even now, it'll take me about a week to 10 days to smoke a pack, if not longer....probably gonna quit during this latest deployment.....trying to get the wife to quit too...and so far, the kiddies hate the fact that we smoke....little shits bring home those flyers showing what lungs look like after X number of years, blah, blah, blah.....too smart for their own good....but I should be glad that they're showing some activism... He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.

If you have spent your youth in smoke and have had to witness your parents cough their lungs out, then die of cancer, it MIGHT waken a person up to the obvious.
A sensical person, that is. Maybe that's why some do not smoke, even if their parents did.

Maybe it's a common thing because most children will be told more often of the dangers of smoking by responsible parents who smoke themselves. My mum smoked and we never liked it. She never did it inside the house and we always made fun of her by adding up how much she spent on fags per year. We used to put those smoke pellets in her cigarettes for a laugh too
I tried a few when I was a teenager when it was supposed to be "cool" and they did nothing for me so I figured why bother starting if it takes a good few months to get addicted anyway? Waste of money.

Same here. I never smoked and never will. I don't even date women who smoke. It's a smelly, disgusting habit. My dad quit eventually, but not my mother.

Both of my parents were smokers. (My father no longer does.) I've never smoked myself, and -- to the best of my knowledge -- none of my siblings has either.
I don't know if there's a connection. The main reason why I've never smoked is that it simply doesn't appeal to me. However, seeing my parents (and other family members) struggle with nicotine addiction makes me think that it wouldn't be a good idea to start now. A sensical person, that is. My grandfather was a smoker from his teenage years until his 70th birthday. Unfortunately, he quit too late and died of lung cancer at age 81. Shortly before his death, he said that he wished he'd never started. At the time, three of his six children smoked. Eight years later, those three are still smokers. My sense is that at least two of them wish they were non-smokers. However, nicotine is pretty addictive stuff. Why else would they continue to do it even after it killed their father? They're all reasonably intelligent people. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |
