If this is true, this is some very sad news for baseball. It is now being reported that New York Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle owned and was on the plane that just crashed into an apartment building in NY.

Don't get me wrong, it is sad anytime anyone loses their life, but this hits home a little bit more since I am such a huge Baseball fan. And Cory did pitch for the A's a few years back sad .

I dont wanna jump the gun but woah did the Tigers look superior to the A's last night! Sure there's plenty of baseball left to play but if the A's dont win game 2 tonight, what are the odds of them pulling it off once they get to Motown? Thats not a slappy talkin', thats just reality.

A co-worker of mine (who is actually a Red Sox fan but I forgive him anyway biggrin ) just pointed out that the last 4 World Series Champions actually lost the first game of the Championship Series.

So we are right on track wink .

Yeah, the talking heads have been spewing that bile for the last 20 hours or so.

Hey Sowhat, that was a hellova game the A's played last night. I was sweating bullets at the bottom of the ninth when bases were loaded and big Frank was at bat. I thought for sure he would blast one and end up having the winning run but he popped one up and the Tigers won 8-5. Thank God. U could tell that the A's brought their A game but it just wasnt enough to defeat the best team in baseball. Now the A's come to Detroit down 2 games. Its going to be pure PANDEMONIUM!

That's why they say it is a "game of inches". Frank Thomas just barely missed that pitch. But in the end the tigers have executed and the A's have not.

Detroit is tough and I knew it would be a battle, but I am dissappointed the A's have not played better, like I have seen them play most of this season, especially in the second half.

I will give credit to the Tigers who have taken the A's somewhat out of their game.

Now the mission is to win at least 2 games in Detroit and bring the series back to Oakland where anything can happen. Not easy at all, but not impossible either.

I have seen the A's have a couple of bad games in a row this year then turn it right around with a great performance from one of their starters. And once that happened it seemed to be contagious and the A's would run off a string of victories.

The problem is that the next two A's starters are capable of being un-hittable at times, Harden and Haren rely heavily on their fastballs, which the tigers are a great fastball hitting team.

The Tigers are half way there and the A's have a huge mountain to climb, so by Monday either the tigers will be going to the World Series or this series will be going back to Oakland.

The fans at Comerica Park are going to be unreal on Friday night. To say that the city is geeked would be an understatement. I wonder why the folks in Oakland kept the upper deck covered. Didnt they wanna sell those tickets?

That's an extra 15,000 seats by the way. They have been covered all year long. It looks nice with the tarps up there (especially in person), and I am sure they saved money during the season by closing off the third deck (saving on security and consolidating consession stands) but I am not sure why they decided to keep it closed for the playoffs.

And the A's ownership had originally planned to keep them covered even if the A's made the Word Series, but the Commisioners office stepped in and IF the A's make the World Series, they will uncover the seats (at $150 a seat for the nose bleed seats confused ).

For the post-season it may have to do with staffing. They have not staffed consessions and security for the third deck all year long, now it will probably be very difficult to staff those positions with competent people on such short notice.

Plus the new statium they are planning to build will hold just about 35,000, exactly what their current stadium holds with the third deck closed.

I've got tickets to the Red Wings game at Joe Louis for Fri night...it's a good thing the Tiger's game got moved to 4:35 instead of that evening time. I think they changed the time for the weather, but it will work out great for traffic congestion too. I work downtown and have monthly parking, so I will park and ride the people mover to JL...Sounds like a party to me!!!

It's all about the San Jose Sharks this year!

I rode on the people mover one time right past Joe Louis Arena. My Aunt took us there one day when we were visiting her in Kalamazoo.

The weather is supposed to get extra "special" later in the evening. I thinks its primarily a weather issue.

70 sounds wonderful right now. Its about 45 now. There is a wind chill in the 30s now though. It snowed here yesterday. It was the earliest measureable snow ever in Detroit. Its usually 60 degrees in a typical mid-October day here. Its supposed to get back to normal after the weekend, milder that is.

Damn that's cold. At least we have Canadian Rich Harden on the mound today. He should be used to this kind of weather. As for the rest of the A's being used to this weather..... confused

falloff Ahhhh.. I see we brought out the Florida Evans, huh?

Games over and the DETROIT TIGERS have shut out the A's to snatch Game 3 of the ALCS. I thought Harden was gonna be a threat. I thought wrong. It took him 8 pitches in the first inning to throw a strike. How pathetic was that? These weather conditions were supposed to make him right at home. I guess not. The Gambler took him to school. BTW, Curtis Granderson was safe at 3rd base at the bottom of the 7th but the ump called him out. That was some BS. It doesnt matter though, the Tigers take a commanding 3-0 lead over Jokeland. Tigers go for the SWEEP tomorrow at the CoPa!

What a fun time in the Big D last night! We went to see the Red Wings lose (in a good game...overtime and shootout) and then headed over to the Greektown casino to donate our funds for the night (in other words, we lost). The place was in a festive mood all night, with mostly everyone either in a Red Wings Sweater (yes, they're called sweaters, not jerseys) or Tigers caps and jerseys.

My wife's sis-in-law came up with an extra ticket for Saturdays series clinching game 4. My wife was there. She brought me some of the rally

PANDEMONIUM!!

I didnt get to sleep until after 2 this morning! Last night was a dream come true. Tears of joy flowed down my cheek. It was 22 years ago to the day that the Tigers won their last WORLD SERIES. I was 5 years old. I remember those close to me that were Tigers fans who are no longer with us. This one is for them! The scene throughout the city was absolutely beautiful. Strangers hugging each other, young and old, every race, and background. The party didnt stop until the wee hours. Kid Rock gave an impromtu concert at Cheli's across from Comerica. It was historic and surreal. That homerun by Magglio was like something you only dream of. This city is always hungry for a celebration and it looks like its feeding time again! Aint no party like a Detroit Party! woot!

Yezzir! thumbs up!

Ben Walker, Canadian Press
Published: Sunday, October 15, 2006

DETROIT (AP) - It was past midnight when Curtis Granderson, his dad and several family members finished dinner at a popular Greektown restaurant and headed out to a celebration in full swing.

"Sweet," the Detroit Tigers' leadoff man said.

Horns honking and brooms poking through moon roofs, downtown was alive into early Sunday. Spotlights swirled in the sky, people on the street slapped high-fives with strangers.

When the sun rose above Woodward Avenue across the street from Comerica Park, it lit up the State Theater's marquee "Let's Party Like It's 1984" in what might become the Motor City's new catch phrase.

Going to the World Series will make a city go a little crazy. Especially one that's been starved for a winner for 22 years.

"Nobody could have expected this. It's unreal," said Tigers Hall of Famer Al Kaline, now working in the club's front office.

The Tigers continued their remarkable journey from farce to force by sweeping Oakland in the American League championship series, beating the Athletics 6-3 on Saturday when Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run homer with two out in the ninth inning.

Ordonez raised one arm, then both after connecting for his second home run in Game 4. From all corners of the stadium and beyond, Tigers fans cheered a pennant that seemed impossible back in spring training.

While the party was in progress on the field, Ordonez wandered around asking, "Where's my family? Where's my family?"

At the same time, the stadium announcer neatly let everyone know the date of the Tigers' next home game: next Saturday, for the World Series opener against either the St. Louis Cardinals or New York Mets.

The losingest team in baseball over the past 13 seasons, the club that suffered through 119 defeats only three years ago, will make its first Series appearance since 1984.

Manager Jim Leyland and these Tigers will go in with a seven-game postseason winning streak - suddenly they're looking a lot like the 2004 Boston Red Sox and 2005 Chicago White Sox, teams that got on a roll in October and stampeded to the championship.

Catcher Ivan Rodriguez and pitcher Kenny Rogers are the only players on Detroit's roster with Series experience. General manager Dave Dombrowski and Leyland were together when the Florida Marlins won the 1997 crown.

"This is an amazing moment. Not just for us, but for this whole city," Rodriguez said.

And with a week to rest up, the Tigers figure to be in good shape. Leyland can set up the rotation any way he wants, picking Rogers, Justin Verlander, Nate Robertson or Jeremy Bonderman to pitch Game 1.

Plus, first baseman Sean Casey and hard-throwing reliever Joel Zumaya will get extra time to recover from injuries that sidelined them for most of the ALCS.

Casey, who batted third in the order, injured his left calf in the opener against Oakland. He expects to return to the lineup Saturday.
